so what would happen if you get champs league ??? you would still have league games followed by midweek European. whats the difference?

posted on 12/2/17

Yea I feel we still need to take the europa very seriously as I still don't think we will get champs league via top 4.

There is a difference. There isn't the same amount of time between CL/PL games and Europa/PL games

As Manchester Utd every game in every comp should be taken seriously as any other. Just because some of our top four rivals aren't good enough too juggle cup football with chasing top four doesn't mean we should not go all guns blazing. We have a decent sized squad. We should be able to cope fine.

You could only really judge it in hindsight... Going out is only worth it if we get top 4

Top 4 is so tight and competitive... Winning europa could be just as likely

I'd like to win it tbh... Hope for a 99 style of season end where pushing for everything creates momentum and drives us on

I think for us to survive the run in in all comps we'd almost need to have two separate teams and alternate between them.

I.e. , have a Europa and FA Cup side and one for the league

Tricky one, I'd rather finish outside top 4 and win Europa, but it's not an easy tournament to win, so it may actually be easier to get top 4.

A European trophy plus CL spot> top4, easy.

Your comfy 6th place suggests otherwise

2 points off second suggests we're fine champ.

Utd getting both the mick cups under their belt & a top 4 would make for a seriously good season

momentum would suggest this is do-able

Hahahaha you couldn't be more right.

I found myself in a football sense these last three years.

Fergie taught us win or die.

Moyes taught us life isn't about football. Otherwise you'd kill yourself

I still think we are more likely to win the Europa than to finish in the top four.

Two main reasons:

1) It's a cup so we might get an easier run. In the league know for a fact we still have to play Spurs, Arsenal, City and Chelsea, the first three away from home.

2) In a cup it's up to us; we have to rely on others in the league. Yesterday was a microcosm of the difficulties we face: we won comfortably and moved up a place, only to move down again because somebody else won. I know Spurs lost but Liverpool and Arsenal (for me the weakest and most vulnerable of our rivals) both won and I'm not expecting anything other than a City win tomorrow.

So, yes, going out of the Europa would be real blow for us.

I know it's important but I'm never going to be able to think top 4 is a great achievement, not with our funds, manager and history. So Europa Cup for me.

The sheer fact we are yet to play 4 of the top 5 suggests that Europa is as good a chance of us qualifying for the CL as the PL is.

Best route to CL footy for us at the moment is via the Europa.

Look at the opposition we could face in the EL. Toughest I'd say is Spurs.

Then look at our remaining PL fixture list compared to our 5 other rivals.

Add to the fact we are 6th currently, after a 16 match unbeaten run.

No brainer.

But we don't need to beat all those top 4/5 sides to make the top 4.

We could draw them all and still make top 4. The Europa isn't as fearsome as the CL but there are some very dangerous sides left.

Bilbao, Villarreal, Roma, Shatkhtar etc all would be very hard ties on European nights.

The Europa League is a fantastic competition imo.

English clubs often go about things big headed and claim to be big clubs etc and that trickles through to the fans.

Playing in Europe is about prestige, an escape and tactical challenege.

Liverpool, Fulham, Chelsea, Rangers & Celtic have all got to a final in recent years but with the resources down south it's an arena you ought to have done better in compared to the continent.

Clubs are building history when English sides are weighing up what competition has more importance.

"Pretty Pathetic"

Well said to everyone. And that is how it should be.

If we can't beat them we have no business in the champions league next year anyway
