As Martin Samuel frequently points out, there haven’t been too many differing FA Cup Winners over the past 25 years. Wigan have been the biggest ‘Shock’ winners.

I just think if all our ‘top teams’ were to take it more seriously then perhaps the list of winners may have been different in some of the years. Or at least the finalists may have been different.

Spain having Madrid and Barca are always more likely to dominate. Their dominance in La Liga also means sides like Sevilla can focus more on Europa, since they aren't going to win the league.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Sevilla have come closer in recent times to winning the league than Spurs.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
And Atleti of course have won 2 Europas and La Liga in recent times, and come agonisingly close to the CL too.

(Both Sevilla and Atlético have also made 2 Spanish cup finals apiece recently, each winning one and losing one.

In all, I'd say that in recent years they've simply been a. more ambitious, and b. better
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Liverpool and Chelsea won the CL without even being close to winning the league.

Fulham and boro almost won the Europa.

Ambition may be a part of it, but priority and talent certainly is.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
I don't get where you're coming from. The replies above were in response to your suggestion that the likes of Sevilla are free to prioritise the EL because they don't stand a chance in La Liga.

If anything, with far lower league revenues than in the Prem, you could argue that the financial incentive for a Liga club to make the CL is far greater than is it for PL clubs.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
And where did the Europa winners finish last season?

posted on 14/2/17

Ideally we (Chelsea) could do with Utd & $puds staying in that comp until the very last minute

Can they meet in the final...?...not sure

You know in the 90s and 00s great teams won the Europa League/UEFA Cup and I wish more English clubs taking it seriously like the Spanish teams do.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I absolutely love it that we won it...

I don’t know how other teams’ fans would feel, but speaking for me, I wanted to win the Europa.
----------------------------------------------------------

Both 69 and myself also both wanted us to win it - as we had tickets for the final!!

Remember the Cup Winner's Cup victory in 1998. I don't as I was 4 But people who do still talk glowingly about it.
---------------------------------------------------------------

Some of us remember winning it in 71 - before Southampton 'B' had a sniff of a European trophy.

Now that's history - apparently!

Good to know. i think Chelsea should take all competitions seriously.

I am glad the CL place prize has improved the EL's standing, but it should be a great competition to play and win.

Lets face it Pep, that era laid the groundwork for the Abramovich dynasty. It raised the European profile of the Club and combined with the Bridge being done up at the time like a dogs dinner in the sexiest part of London, no wonder someone like Mr. A was gonna take the bait.

Reminds me of the film Field of Dreams. "Build it and he will come" We did and of course he did. It always makes me grin when detractors say we "Won the lottery" We didn't, the potential was always there, but that era showed the rest of Football that we also could be an exciting proposition.

Didn't you win the European Cup winners' Cup in those days (and beat us -Madrid- in the European SuperCup game)? '98 was it?

I grew up watching the 90s Chelsea and it was a joy. Dan petrescu in my opinion is the best attacking fb the league has seen. Do Matteo, vialli, desailly, lebeouf(quite possibly the best passing cb I've seen) lie saux and don't let anyone tell u anything different about Dennis wise, he was a nasty bar..stard but was also a fantastic footballer. Great crosser and passer and good for the odd goal.

Flo, poyet.

I to this day believe we would have won the league if not for injuries to casiraghi and other disruptions.

Yes - beat Stuttgart in the final in the Rasunda stadium Stockholm followed by beating RM in the Super Cup by a Gus Poyet winner!

Not forgetting it was RM we also beat in the 71 final of course!

I was only 3 at the time, but I've heard stories about that one. Not sure if it was Pirri or Amancio, or if it was before the final or the replay, but one of our main players later told how Chelsea players were downing pint after pint at a reception the night before the game. The Madrid lads thought they'd run rings around them the next day, and it turned out to be the complete opposite. Your guys ran ours into the ground.

IOAG, I have just finished reading Charlie Cooke's autobiography and he was excited in 1971 to be playing against his hero at the time, who was the Legendary Franscisco Gento, whom he had gone to see in Glasgow for the European Cup Final of 1960. They also had Zoco, Amancio and Velazquez all of who were over 30. So it wasn't a classic Real Madrid team which is probably why they were competing for the ECWC rather than their normal European Cup.

posted on 14/2/17

Would've made sense you ran us into the ground then. Gento must've been well past it by then, 40 or so?

Was much more common back then to play at the top level until a ripe old age though. Di Stefano and Puskas were both well into their 30s for that 1960 final.

posted on 14/2/17

Cooke confirms that Gento was "Closer to 40 than 30 at that point"

He also confirms that him, Baldwin & Osgood were all on the piiss the day before the replay and all woke up with hangovers until about midday of the Final replay. Hudson was with them also but sensibly jogged on while he still was able to do so. Probably waiting for Brummie to buy him another drink

The dilemma Spurs are in is thus:

We do not pay the biggest wages in the division.

To keep our best players, we need to be challenging in the league, and qualifying for the CL. That is the incentive for players to stay at our club. A cash injection too, which I am sure the players are financially rewarded for.

We won a trophy in 2008 for example, but it was not enough for Berbatov and Keane who both left. Bale and Modric both upped sticks after failing to qualify for the CL for 3 years

Winning the Europa would be great, but there are 9 games left to do so. It is a slog that needs managing, otherwise it can be detrimental to league position.

Chelsea and United are in a position to pay huge wages to players to keep them happy without CL football - one by having an owner who the club owes £1bn, the other being the most profitable club in world football.

Other clubs have their own priorities.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

We also have the sixth largest turnover in Europe.
That helps pay wages.

As does generating huge commercial revenue which cokes from winning trophies.

Of course Roman's investment made all this possible.

But lose the chip on your shoulder and dry your eyes
