I kind of agree, whether he did those things for the knighthood or the good of "the people", the things he did still brought a positive outcome.

Good point busby, I don't get the uproar personally, anyone coudl be made to look like a cant if their personal emails / texts / calls were made public.

in short flash

i dont give a monkeys about this if not getting a knighthood is something to be concerned about then life must be pretty good for Mr Beckham

These awards should be abolished.

It's all about 'Brand Beckhmam'. He's gone about things in the wrong way, all seems a bit calculated and entitled to me.

So would the world be a better place if "Brand Beckham" didn't do all the charity work? Regardless of the motive.....

The honours systems is outdated.

Does he deserve one?

Probably more so than half the caants that do get one.

Of course not, doesn't invalidate the point though.

Beckham only has to scribble his name on a ball and he can generate a few £k for charity, but he hasn't really made any sacrifice in doing so, therefore I don't think it says much about him. And as drogba demonstarted, you wonder what goes on inside these 'charitable foundations'. Is it a lavish setup. Is there any end product. Is money going to family and friends. etc

Who is to say he isn't doing charity work for the intention of helping people AS WELL as wanting to receive a knighthood? Maybe helping people still makes him happy regardless?

As Busby said, if his involvement has brought more attention, and funding in regard to Unicef campaigns, then irrespective of any ulterior motives that Beckham mighty have been harbouring, it was obviously worthwhile having him involved.
If what has been revealed in these emails is correct however, his name should be removed from any list, in regard to potential recipients for a knighthood.

It doesn't matter if it's calculated or entitled though. Do you care?

Most of the famous people that get them dont deserve them, for all the 'charity talk' they still have millions and millions hidden away, if these people truly cared so much theyd give away 90% of their wealth and still live a comfortable lifestyle, then theres the tax breaks they benefit from when they open a charity

Bit of a sweeping statement.

posted on 17/2/17

May be a sweeping statement - but its not untrue is it?

Its easy to do "stuff" when you pretty much have unlimited wealth.

See very few of these bleeding hearts doing much more than whats required to tick a few boxes.

TV appearances - Check
Shake hands of some equally overpaid government official - Check
Take part in sob story TV documentary - Check

And the list goes on.

Would much rather honour people who deserve it, rather than those who think they do. I have much more respect for people who earn 25k a year.....yes a year, who take sabbaticals etc to help in 3rd world countries doing things like like build houses than a washed up sportsman who has nothing better to do and is bored.

No one has to do charity. I have respect for anyone who does charity and I don't ever really try to compare the level of respect I have for different people who do different types of charity.

posted on 17/2/17

Yeah any charity is better than none, i just dont think these people are as special and generous as they make out to be, theres alot of people who earn feck all that dedicate time to help those less fortunate, they rarely get the recognition they deserve imo (not that it should be about point scoring)

I've not read or heard a lot of this be Khan stuff, but he's being doing charity stuff for a long time. So it would be a kind of very long term plan if he's been after a knighthood all along.

Whatever reasons he has done some good charity work so I can't begrudge him too much.

posted on 17/2/17

Beckham- not be Khan I'm not implying he's been a Star Trek villain all along ..

posted on 17/2/17

How I see it is, that with the Charity work he has done you could justifiably argue that he deserves one, however having said that, it is quite unedifying to be (a) needily and desperately seeking to obtain one and (b) Sniping at others like Katherine Jenkins who have been already been recognised and given awards.

If I were in his shoes and I had been outed like that I would be feeling very embarrassed personally.

Why was Katherine Jenkins given a knighthood?
