That depends on whether the word "overrated" automatically has to be translated into "not all that"...

Dunno why you're winking. I never said it did.
_______________

Erm...your Beatles analogy indicated that you had, in fact, said the opposite. Hence the winking smiley.

I agreed with your point and felt it applied equally to your comment above.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
My Beatles analogy. Oh yeah, sorry I forgot. Remind me what I said again, it's been a long day misty mate.

Drogba
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Keep taking the tablets
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Scored in big moments and against Arsenal which helped convince people he was a great when he didn't score that many goals for a top striker.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
His goal ratio for Chelsea would suggest he was a top striker. Scored the winner in CL final (no pressure there)
Two footed, brilliant in the air and extremely quick for a guy of his physique. A legend in our eyes, yours don't really matter!

i remember a similar music thread and a mention of the beatles being mocked, when the point is not that they weren't any good, but that they are almost universally considered the greatest band ever, with almost no debate allowed. so to me they are overrated.
______________

This one Don.

I took your point to mean that saying they are overrated does not mean they "weren't all that"!

I love the Beatles...they were one of the best bands ever...and they are massively overrated!

I feel a similar logic applies to Zidane. Brilliant player but overrated by those who put him in the same bracket as Maradona and co.

Cantona I agree with. Only rated by United fans as he was an iconic player that arrived the season that United won the title for the first time in 26 years. He did nothing in Europe and whilst undoubtedly being a good player, I have seen some say he is in the top 3 United players of all time. I wouldn't have him in the top 10.

How anyone can say Zidane is overrated I don't know. Without doubt the greatest player I have ever seen "live" and always turned up in the big games....not really sure how you can say otherwise.

Kahn was the best keeper in the world for around 2 years. He was way overrated beyond those 2 years though as his reputation carried him.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Spot on with all of that - Cantona looked great against the might of Sheff Wed but disappeared in European games- flat track bully

There are a few to choose from,
Jimmy Greaves, Bobby Tambling,Peter Osgood to name a few. My favorite due to my age is Kerry Dixon. Just a shame we were pants in that era!

His career was in no way consistently good
_________________

Really? he won 2 titles with Marseille then went to Leeds and won the title there. Then he went to United and won back to back titles there...and he would have had 5 in a row at United (7 in a row in total) had he not been banned in '95.

Club[edit]
Marseille
Division 1 (2): 1988–89, 1990–91
Montpellier
Coupe de France: 1989–90
Leeds United
First Division: 1991–92
Charity Shield: 1992
Manchester United
Premier League (4): 1992–93, 1993–94, 1995–96, 1996–97
FA Cup (2): 1993–94, 1995–96
Charity Shield (3): 1993, 1994, 1996

How is that not a consistent career? How many players have won four consecutive league titles at 3 different clubs?

How many players win 7 league titles in their career?

How many players win the league and FA Cup double - twice?

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Come on, titles aren't a barometer for a players ability.

We're talking about legend of the game status here. Cantona fell out with Marseilles and was sold after one of the league wins. It's not like he played at his 'Man Utd' level for his whole career. He was patchy in France and retired pre-England. He was also patchy in international football and jettisoned (despite playing his best stuff with Utd) because they wanted to bring through Zidane - although no shame in that.

I've just saying his career wasn't consistently at the level we saw at Utd.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
By your logic, we can add Thierry Henry to the list. Failed in Juventus, then getting legend status in Arsenal

Paul Gascoigne. He managed one good season and had a couple of moments of brilliance, but that was it

posted on 21/2/17

Eric Cantona - basically a French Matt Le Tissier, but with more of an attitude problem. Didn't try hard in a very well structured Utd team and looked a genius for it. Likes of Zola, Ginola, Dybala etc would have been exponentially better.

Brazilian Ronaldo – Fat, slow, weak shot. Too scared to try his hand in the best league in the world. Should not even be considered in the same sentence as those who actually did it in a proper league like Andy Cole, Sheringham, Solskjaer. The bloke was a fraud but just because he had the same name as Cristiano, he was bigged up to be world class.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
This must be a wum. Are you insane? Are you mad? Brazilian ('Fat' Ronaldo was unbelievable. His injuries would have ended the careers of lesser players but he came back from them to reach new heights. The most complete striker of all time and absolutely unplayable at his best. Have you seen some of his footwork from his Youtube reels, either? I know I've bitten for this wum but I had to put this right; it's like a moral duty.

Pele was overrated, great goal record playing against local farmers in Brazil. But gets labelled the best in history due to a couple of good tournaments at the WC, if that's all you have to do then Klose is the best striker ever.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Pele's stats were fattened-up by playing exhibition games against dwarves and oompa-loompas. He's also bitter and jealous in his comments about recent players who are better than him, such as Messi.
