Marcelo
Another one who's overrated
I still see nothing to suggest that:
Cantona - talked about as if he is one of the PL's greatest ever players
Zidane - talked about as if he is one of the greatest players of all time
Kahn - talked about as if he is the greatest ever GK
Baggio - regarded as a striker all players should aspire to be
&
Riquelme - regarded as one of the greatest playmakers of the last 20 years
Are not overrated.
Edin have you not stopped yet
Edinspur - that's because you are an idiot.
For me Zidane was one of the best players ever... no doubt.
Took France to glory and like it or not, he was a big game player. He was magic, the way he controlled the ball effortlessly and the impact he had on players around him. I used to tune in to watch Real and France just to see him play and he was definitely one of the reasons that I liked football! Him and Lizerazu or Carlos was wonderful to watch and the times where he'd own Brazil (when they were good) was brilliant. Massive shame at how his career ended... but he is proving his excellence at managerial level as well.
I'd have added Bergkamp to the list as well... imo he made Henry at arsenal.
Bergkamp to the list of overrated or best players ever?

Marcelo is class and has been one of the key reasons why you have won 3 La Ligas, 2 CLs and 2 Copa Del Reys.
Plus his goal rate isn't *too* far off Roberto's is, even though he doesn't take penalties or free kicks.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Being a set piece taker in a team containing players like Ronaldo or Zidane isn't something that gets gifted to you.
Roberto was a far greater threat going forwards, and even then, a much better defender than Marcelo. He was also an all-round far more intelligent player, as well as being more relentless and having a better engine. It's like we replaced a Maserati with a Vauxhall Tigra.
I feel being a player with a good touch, or attacking prowess often means you are somehow better than a defending player.
Likes of Baresi to Roy Keane, Hierro to Thuram should be held in higher regard in a lot of these lists.
Good article that Guardian one btw IOAG.
I think Marcelo is a fantastic defender, Carlos does have better calves though.
Zidane was a joy to behold. A concert hall musician to Ronaldinho's street busker (with every respect for street performers), they were each masters in their own way.
Put it this way, with either of them on the pitch, you could play on a pitch with no goals and still leave the ground feeling you'd got your money's worth.
But that's not really quantifiable though IOAG. I have no issue people having Zidane as one of their favourite players, I do think that him being labelled as one of the greatest of all time is wrong.
VDV is one of my favourite ever Spurs players but he is far from the best.
What is quantifiable when speaking about what makes a better or worse footballer though? How do you even establish how 'rated' a footballer is to even begin considering him under or above that standard?
It's all pretty subjective and depends on what qualities we appreciate.
Football to me is entertainment. If I want industry, I'll visit a cement factory.

Surely statistics and league finishes and consistently contribution without letting the team down are ways to measure.
Not half - assing it for Juve, or RM at times in the league, then getting yourself suspended every second month

No way! Some things just cannot be quantified statistically.
Zidane dragged France to the WC final in 2006.The magic against Brazil where he showed that he was a class above in that match but the stat will show that he made 1 assist.
The game is much more than stats and perceived effectiveness.
What makes him one of the greatest of all time is because of the way he played the game. Simple, Iconic, Skillfull, Magical... That is also a metric that you don't take into account. He played the beautiful game. He showed that football was an art form rather than a processed science.
But Zlatan also told Michael Owen to suck his bawws or something along those lines so he can't be trusted.
Tbh, Zlats isn't as much fun since he has become the 'Dare to Zlatan' marketing machine as he was when he was that relatively unknown 'can only do it in weak leagues' pre-Overhead lob.

Haha. On that basis, Cantona was untouchable. Played 5 PL seasons and won the title in all 5. The only time he let the team down was when he got banned. Otherwise it would have been 6 titles in a row. 7 if you count his title with Marseille in '91...He was also the best player in both the Leeds and Man United title winning teams.
Seems like a pretty consistent contribution to me.

Zidane was incredibly impressive in the knockout stages bar the final I agree. He was poor in the group stages though, which people overlook. If we are basing it off of that as a criteria then Forlan should be held in higher regard.
He was one of the most exciting players to watch, I do not doubt that, but people praise inconsistent flair players much higher than the consistent solid players who win you the league.
If he made players around him so much better, then he would have won the league more than 3 times in his career, or the CL once.
Proper GOAT of all time players like Ronaldinho, CR7, Real Ronaldo, Messi, Xavi etc have achieved much more.
