Roberto Baggio. can't even score from 12 yards out.

All fair points lallana, but in terms of consistency, season in, season out, i still think aguero shades it....suarez's final season was blistering, but then so was kevin phillips for one season at sunderland - note, i am not saying that kevin phillips > suarez.

but these are always tricky debates, see the comments on zidane, no one is saying he is rubbish, just that he wasn't quite as good as some people say (which i happen to agree with, which is by the by).

This.

Every time we do a GOAT thread or when I hear people talking about legends of the game down the pub, I cringe when Lee Trundles name comes up every time.

This is a really interesting debate because I think the two are so closely matched. For me however, for the last 3 seasons Suarez has reached a level that Aguero has never quite managed. Both top players though

Until Messi does it on a cold Tuesday night in Stoke he will always be overrated.

First of all, five stars for the well constructed wind-up.

But it's also an interesting question. E.g. Zidane was a fine technician but I've always seen him as a bit of a luxury player rather than a man who dominated games. He looked like the best player on the pitch because he was such a fine technician but I don't think he made the difference as much as Rivaldo or Ronaldinho did to their respective teams.

Cantona wasn't as talented as some players mentioned in this thread but his talent combined with force of personality made him arguably the most influential player of the PL era. Without him United might well have won the league, but they wouldn't have dominated it with the confidence and swagger that Cantona gave them, and which he passed on to the Fledglings.

How anyone can rate Zidane anything other than an absolute legend of the game is moronic.

There are only a handful of players who you could say would turn up to the very big occasions. Even Messi, with all his greatness, hasn't really shown he can perform at the big occasions.

Another player who I think is underrated is Suarez. As much as I hate to say it, but he was absolutely incredible for Liverpool, and revitalised Barcelona when they began to slip from the very top. He dragged the likes of Sturridge and Sterling to very nearly winning the Premier League. His energy in games is infectiuos, and his talent unquestioned.

One player who I would say is slightly overrated is Neuer. Apart from a few good saves, he makes a number of bad judgement calls that has Bayern conceding cheap goals.

Zidane overrated ?????

Good Lord !!!!!

A shocking shout !!!!!!

I can only assume you were too young to watch him play.

Messi can't perform at the big occasions?

21 goals in El Classico's (3 more than any other player)

22 goals in finals, played in 18 and won 14.

I dread to think what 'performing' actually is then

the messi debate is laughable. just man u Ronaldo fanboys who hate as if it weren't for messi, Ronaldo would have been hands down the greatest player on the planet for the best part of the last 10 years

Pele was overrated, great goal record playing against local farmers in Brazil. But gets labelled the best in history due to a couple of good tournaments at the WC, if that's all you have to do then Klose is the best striker ever.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I'd say Suarez is a little overrated, (and conversely Aguero a little underrated), partly for that reason.

Of his 82 goals in England 12 came against the farmers of Norwich, with a further 18 against Wigan, Sunderland, and Cardiff. Against that in 3.5 seasons in England he scored 7 goals vs Arsenal/United/City/Chelsea combined. Didn't do much for Pool in Europe and, other than one Copa America, all his goals for Uruguay have brought little joy to the team, and thrown out of last WC in disgrace.

Aguero was more prolific in the PL - and literally from game one, whereas suarez took 18 months to really hit his stride - and, far from running out of steam in the title run in, scored the most critical PL goal ever. More prolific in Europe, and far more CL goals, given that suarez played many of his European games in the ropey.

Yet one is labelled world class/best striker of the last decade etc, the other is simply "very good".

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Suarez joined a crap team, city were doing well, suarez hit the goal record without taking a single pen, had he done hed of shattered the record.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Is this the same Suarez which has scored 170 career goals in his last 4 and a half seasons while domestically playing in the 'two best leagues in the world' having barely taken a pen? Yeah, definitely overrated...

Having read the OP, I am wary of even getting involved in this thread, as it seems like an obvious wum. Anyone who thinks that Zidane, Cantona and Baggio were overrated is either on the wum or stupid. He even alluded to the fact Cantona was lazy! Laughable.

This thread has proven that Zidane is overrated.

You get fat english lads who have only watched him on TV in the World Cups; or CL knock-out stages stating that he was this fantastic player. Whereas in reality his league performances were inconsistent, and even his knock-out record was pretty poor.

98 WC - spent more games suspended than he did score goals. Absent for most of the tournament and turned up in the final.

02 WC - injured for part, but France didn't even get through the group stages

06 WC - poor in the group stages (surved a suspension again), admittedly fantastic in the knockouts then let his nation down in the final

maybe, but you could argue that it was his goals that got us there in the first place.

plus you cant go to a major competition and expect 1 person to win it, the whole team has been shiiiiit for years
