some of the comments in here are quality. people suggesting zidane wasn't that good etc

to be fair chronic, these threads are tricky ones....there is a clear line between saying a footballer is not that good, and saying he is overrrated, but it can get blurred.

i remember a similar music thread and a mention of the beatles being mocked, when the point is not that they weren't any good, but that they are almost universally considered the greatest band ever, with almost no debate allowed. so to me they are overrated.

music is different as everyone has different styles. I can't stand the beatles but I respect them hugely influential in the music business and great musicians.

I don't regard Cantona as being anywhere near the level of Maradona, Messi or Ronaldo (Zidane for me is not in the same league as those player).

Nor does he have to be in order to be regarded as a legend. If you think that only the handful of greatest players ever can be described as legends then there are about 5 or 10 legends in the entire history of the game and everyone else is "overrated".

Seems a silly way of looking at it to me...

Obviously not everyone else is overrated! I never said or even implied that.

Some players are seen as close to that top level, elite players I'll call them for want of a better term, and Cantona is considered one of them by many. For that (and that alone) I would argue he's overrated. Still a very good footballer but not elite. Again, in my opinion.

But you are comparing Cantona with the best players who ever lived and then calling him overrated on that basis.

My point is that nearly every player who has ever lived is overrated if they have to live up to Ronaldo/Messi/Maradona standards in order to be called a "legend".

As a United fan, I have no problem with players like Lampard and Gerrard being called legends because they were for their respective clubs and in the PL in general.

You said that Cantona is not a legend and then went on about "elite" players like Messi and Maradona.

If you are now saying that Cantona is not "elite" then that is a different argument entirely and I would suggest that you are moving the goal posts.

I agree that Cantona was never part of the "elite" and never said otherwise. Nor has any United fan that I have ever met.

He is/was a legend though.

That means he IS overrated though. Not was. The suggestion being that he was overrated in his time.

PS I also agree that the Beatles were overrated.
