Stool Ball? I take it went to school down my way. Its a local game only really played in Sussex.
I was a team player, winning was always the aim. At my school, anyone who didnt put the effort in got verbal abuse from everyone else.

wtf is stool ball? is that like bench ball?
i was given a try out as full back , found myself in the game as last defender as this massive tank of a forward, twice as large as me he looked at the moment, , Lomu esque came thundering towards me not even attempting to dodge the mosquito in his path.
I launched myself headfirst into his midriff, both of us crashing down, prevented the sure try , and found myself on the team list.
Same as you, always thought I was a bit lucky that day, and rather faked my way in, but then again, luck is how you use your opportunities.
I was always more of a team player. Mainly due to a lack of natural talent and being tall for my age, I was always played at the back, or as the holding midfielder.
My school team was full of far more talented players, a number of whom turned out at some point or other at various levels for the three Devon clubs.
I was more than happy to be the Martin skrtel to the far more naturally gifted Danny agger type who played alongside me. We won games, and I was happy being the stopper if it meant the better lads could get us goals.
Was always handy coming up for corners though.
I have played league cricket for years, and have always been a team player that values team success over personal glory.
I am a batting all rounder that has batted everywhere in the order from 1-11 over the years and a spin bowler. I don`t complain if I do not get to bat or ball, and am just happy to be part of a team.
Contrast that with certain team mates over the years, who will happily play for their averages to the detriment of the team and certain captains that look after their favourites.
Other members are quick to complain if they think they are not batting high enough up the order or bowling enough overs. They see turning out on a Saturday and paying their match fee as their `leisure time` and consequently they should be getting their `money`s worth`, whether it is to the detriment of the team or not.
There are team players and selfish individuals in most walks of life.
I am totally a team player in spirit, although everyone enjoys a bit of glory once in a while.
The flipside of this is I always struggled with the pressure that comes from being in a team - letting the side down was always a worry of mine. I take mistakes I make to heart
I always thought an individual sport would have suited me better than football. I never rated myself particularly highly, but I was always a go-to player for my teams so must have been on the right track.
Team player, id sit on the subs bench eating pies.
Anyway the popular kids started taking bets around school on whether i'd eat a pie during the game or not. I caught wind (not from the pies) and gave my mates the heads up, needless to say they made a killing. At what cost? well the popular kids found out ofc... and ill leave the rest to you.
I was a team player but over competitive, i once as a teenager around 13 i think made a grown woman storm off crying because in a game of rounders on the park involving friends and family because i threw her the ball at last base and she dropped it and i went ape sheit.
Bit of a d!ck really but sometimes i think its what teams need
I'm super competitive so being a team player was a by product of wanting to win ALL the time.
My main memory of junior school football....
We had this little Saturday league within the school. we were randomly allocated in to teams and there was clearly no thought put in to mixing up the abilities because my team had about 4 of the best 5 players in the school and me, who was pretty shat at that age (I learnt my best bet was to be a thug much later).
We won every league game of the season coming in to the final game, a perfect record. We were winning 1-0 on the final game of the season with a few minutes to go when the opposition put a speculative cross in to the box, it posed little danger. Also that year I had just taken up rugby which I was much better at....cross came in and I caught the ball, gave away a penalty and ruined our perfect season.
I was a playground virtuoso with a size 3 football. But on a big pitch I've always been an assist machine. Mainly cos I can't shoot to save my life but I've got a decent pass in me.
