Gazza and Rooney

Gazza was definitiely in that 2nd tier of the world's greatest ever players, along with the likes of Henry/Ronaldinho/Best/Rivaldo/Scholes/Iniesta/Rashford

But he was no where near the top top level of world's greatest ever players such as Pele/Maradona/Messi/Ronaldo/Zidane/Rooney

Rashford in the 2nd tier?

He's in the first tier along with Rooney.

Gazza at Rangers was a joy for us.....could do with him today.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
i cam imagine, bet you guys loved him up there.

how did he do in the old firm games for ou?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Gazza stood out, as you can imagine......playing withBrian Laudrup helped.

Big kid Gazza was easily led though, as Rangers players got him to pretend to play a flute after he scored against Celtic😀All hell kicked off and he got ra death threats.

Happy times😁
----------------------------------------------------------------------
omg yes i had forgot about that,,,,he got a death threat from members of the Irish Republucan Army after that i think
----------------------------------------------------------------------
He did........Celtic just scored after good Rangers start.

Bit of a myth that Rooney was EVER better than Ronaldo. Never was. Ronaldo was both physically and technically superior. Rooney had a better shot at the time, but that was it.

One is way overpaid and the other has turned into a drunk.

I do remember that funny time around early 2010 when every day on Skysports had some pundits debating who was better between Rooney and Messi. Messi was waltzing through players and chipping the keeper every week. Rooney was scoring and tap-ins and headers. Both the journalists and PFA were somehow conned into gifting him the POTY awards by a landslide, despite Drogba having easily the better season, out scoring, out-assisting him, and lifting the league.

Rooney was always overrated and a cheat and the English media loved him and still do even though he's now dung.

IMO that's hindsight talking.

When they both arrived at Utd, Rooney made the more immediate impact and was definitely the better player on the pitch.

Not more talented, but performances were better. Ronaldo had some fairly large question marks around his decision making. He'd be far more interested in tricks than the right ball. He was also a teenager in body and got knocked off the ball a bit easily whereas Rooney was already fairly physically strong.

What we didn't know at that point was that Rooney was close to his peak whereas Ronaldo was a long way off his.

As we've all seen, Ronaldo has answered every question posed and then some to the point where there really is no comparison between the two. I really don't think that was the case at 18/19 though.

Ronaldo is/was an attacking force.

Rooney had an impact all over the pitch and did defensive and attacking roles. Would you ever see Ronaldo chasing back to RB?

The first time I watched Ronaldo was that game for Sporting Lisbon against United in pre-season. Rooney has never been as talented as the lad I watched that day. You also have short memories about Ronaldo's debut against Bolton. There were several comparisons to George Best including from Best himself. He absolutely destroyed them. A few games later, he ran Ashley Cole ragged like I had never seen in a game against Arsenal. Rooney may have looked more mature, but that's because his style was far more rudimentary while Ronaldo played with more flair (often to excess). But we're not disputing who was more mature. Milner was mature too as a teen. I simply disagree Rooney has ever been better than Ronaldo.

-----------------------------------------

that's a typical British football mentality that illustrates the failings of how British football sees the game. In Spanish or South American footy culture, what you think is impact all over the pitch is viewed as being a headless chicken. I remember some interview of Xavi where he critiqued this thinking in British football and pointed out they don't even teach tackling to kids and youth players in Spain.

Never said it was a good or bad thing.

But would you compare an attacking player who helps the team to an attacking player who helps himself

posted on 12/3/17

Which attacking player helps the team and who helps themselves?

John Barnes was better than both

Wrong era for him. Had he been around when colour wasn't an issue with fans he would be raved about

Watford, Liverpool and England. I don't think anything held Barnes back apart from the thinking behind the national team setup.

Rooney didn't choose a payrise over Chelsea; he chose a better club. Of course, Chelsea will never be what Man Utd are but back in 2004 the gap was even greater. As I remember you were on the verge of going bust and I was looking forward to it as the fans were rotten. With global exposure and new overseas fans that rot has been watered down somewhat.
