Ok, I've been sat at work reading this thread and mulling over what I think of McClaren.

My conclusion is that I support Derby County. I don't support the manager. I don't support the chairman.

Whilst I will never trust the 2 faced money chasing grubshuckler that is McClaren, I wont barrack him once during his tenure for the way he did the dirty on us last time.

But God help him if results don't pick up PDQ because he wont have a honeymoon period this time round. I'll give it 6 months.

I cant help thinking this will end in tears (of laughter at the dark end of the A52)

And there are those that say I know nowt!

In a minute I will re-post my comments about Rowett from last Autumn as well ...

I'll have to be patient I guess, it's gone half 12 so Peeder will be on his 2nd lunch break now.

Rowett - next season
by Peeder - are happy days here again? (U1684)
13 April 2016

Ok, as some of you know, I have a few contacts in Directors boxes around the country. Mainly down here in the wild west, but also at a certain club in the West Midlands.

One of them phoned me this morning and told me that Rowett will be taking over next season. He is about as well connected to the W Midlands club involved as can be, so I am inclined to believe him.

I even asked if it would make any difference if we got promoted, but it seems not. Its a done deal, so I'm told.

So, armed with this knowledge, I went straight to the bookies web site to make my fortune and so that I could let you lot know to lump on it big time.

It seems they already know ... he's evens favourite in the betting.

Goddam it - what sort of person let's the bookies know these things before we find out?

Is it worth putting anything on this? I guess a 100% profit on my small wager would be worthwhile ....

AND THEN

Should we be top 6 with this squad under Pearson? Probably, yes. But at the bottom end of it with what we have.
It'll be a long haul this season. I don't see us as top 2 or anywhere close. Somewhere between 5th and 10th I'm afraid, depending on what Lady Luck sends our way!
I’ve said it before and no doubt I will remind you all again – at some stage this season, Rowett is going to manage Derby. My source (who has very strong links with Brum) told me this last season and he hasn’t been wrong so far.

................................................................................
So, lets recap ...

I TOLD YOU SO!

Now, admittedly, I thought it meant the start of the season but, having just checked my online betting slip, I see that I bet on Rowett being named as Derby manager during the 2016/2017 season.

So, thank you Mel for having the foresight to do this. Shame, really, that it wasn't done in August but (I have been advised by the self same source) we wouldn't pay the compensation to Brum that they wanted.

Peeder, I'd give him a 20 point deduction in the phantom prediction league.

so, what do we expect from Rowett? There seems to be a lot of sentiment for the guy, but is he really the right person for the job.

I've reached out to some BC fans and their opinions seem consistent.

1) Was doing a decent job with a VERY poor team (work rate was there, not skill) did not deserve to be sacked.
2) Football was dull BUT the team had enough backbone and ability to hold on that 1-0 wins were possible.
3) Tactically limited, see above, would always try to hold on to 1-0 leads, but often overrun, didn't seem to know how to respond to opposition tactics.
4) Players that came in weren't great, but did a job, more extra numbers to cover than actual improvements (given the one that came from us, and our opinion of him, probably a fair assessment)

They seem to think he would struggle with a different set of players and might struggle at Derby because the dynamic of the team here is very different to the ones at Brum and Burton where workrate and mental strength of the players got results moreso than anything else. Not convinced the players we have can show that mental strength and togetherness.

It will be interesting to see, I like the guy, and wish him luck but it's new territory for him, and I heard a lot of the very same things being said about Pearson.

As Edison said "None of my inventions came by accident. I see a worthwhile need to be met and I make trial after trial until it comes. What it boils down to is one per cent inspiration and ninety-nine per cent perspiration."

I don't give a flying fig how talented our players are - if they waltz around like they did on Friday night we will lose. Rowetts strength, according to the Brum lot, is that his team worked hard and achieved more than the sum of its parts. We are the polar opposite to that at the moment.

I hope Rowett is successful and stays for a good many years, as this managerial "merry-go-round" plays havoc with my productivity.

posted on 14/3/17

yeah, the concern seems to be that the strength of the brum team was their abiltiy to work hard, grind out results, put themselves on the line and Rowett managed to get that out of them and build a team around it while the Derby squad is the polar opposite of that, we've seen enough to suggest they don't have it in them in the first place to get it out of them and will just start throwing their toys out the pram instead.

I hope he does well, but it really does strike me as an odd match unless there are plans for a near complete clear-out at the end of the season.

If they don't have it in them in the first place, then we might as well all give up.

I don't buy that they don't have it in them, just that McClaren didn't have the ability to bring it out of them.

Pearson probably did (as evidenced at Leicester), but want given enough time because Mel wimped out in the face of player power.

I hope Mel has seen the error of his ways and will give Rowett enough time and money to change things.

Sadly, as I have also said before, with Mel in charge I think we are fooked.

Concentration is a key part of that and I'm struggling to remember the last time I felt this team concentrated for the full 95+ minutes of a match.

We have players all over the pitch who are prone to lapses in concentration which is one of the reasons getting them to hold on to a 1 goal lead, or grind out a result is suicide. Sometimes they get away with it, but there are too many heart attack moments even then.

The only way around that is by playing in a way which keeps the opposition on the back foot and doesn't allow them to put us in a position where those lapses in concentration will be quite so costly, but again, we've failed to do that over the course of a match repeatedly and consistently, it also doesn't seem to be Rowett's style to do that and furthermore, even if it was, it limits the opportunity for counterattacking play meaning that against teams who can concentrate for the full match there's no breaking through - we've seen signs of this before too.

We actually seem incapable of switching between the two as well, allowing a team to build some level of over-confidence against us before we show superiority and expose the weaknesses. It just seems that once we allow another team into the ascendency that's in, we're overrun, there's a lapse of concentration, and we concede, we can't flip the game back and take advantage of those situations instead.

Too many players prone to too many little mistakes due to a lack of concentration and lack of awareness combined with a lack of ability to take back control.

I've said before, when we got promoted Seth Johnson was a far bigger part of that than most people give him credit for, full concentration the entire time he was on the pitch, great drive for turning things around in situations like that and fantastic overall awareness. We never replaced him and without him we were more a bottom-half championship side trying to survive in the Prem. We have nobody like that, and a weaker team in general in a far stronger league.

9earchange - Seth Johnson was a class act all round - skill, passion and desire.

But that's all in the past - its all about the future now and so, to come back to your original point, which of the players do you think can move themselves on to another level "mentally" and cut out the errors/panic that we see so often?

Obvs not Keogh, as 666 has made clear!

posted on 14/3/17

If I've said it once, I've said it a thousand times (and it's stating the obvious), our players are paid FAR too much money. They tackle like their next pay cheque depends on it (and future £M's they'll potentially lose-out on should they get injured).

They're simply not hungry enough, and not trying to make an impact, further their careers and attract the big bucks £ 'cus they're already on them!

I'm sure GR will sort this and that, apparently, is his remit.
