The guys was a Muslim. So what? I don't think the guys religion is the most important issue in this whole incident.
---
Do you seriously believe if that guy didn't convert from one faith to other, he would have done this?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
For once I agree with maf. His religion was the main reason behind this attack.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Surely his extreme sociopathy was the main reason behind his attack.
Otherwise we'd see more than 0.001% of Muslims in the country committing acts of terror.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I said earlier that this person is a violent, despicable individual regardless of religion. But I'm positive that he wouldn't have carried out this attack without the influence of whoever converted him to Islam. Thus religion has played a part.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I was countering the assertion that his religion was the "main reason behind his attack", which is clearly untrue, otherwise we'd see more than a miniscule proportion of British Muslims committing acts of terror.
It is very common for sociopaths to latch on to radical ideologies with a theory of blame attached - textbook examples are Anders Breivik and Timothy McVeigh; and it might appear (although this is still speculation of course) that Masood was introduced an extreme interpretation of Islam that provided him with (within himself) a justification for the continuation of his violent behaviour, with obviously an horrific end result.
We will likely have a better idea in time, but it is a common theme.
If he was indeed radicalised in/after spending time in prison, then beyond his apparent sociopathy (and/or other psychological issues), I would suggest that those who worked to radicalise him will have had far more of an influence on his beliefs and behaviour than the Qu'ran alone.
Because again, the overwhelming majority of British (and otherwise) converts to Islam are well-adjusted, peace-loving people.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
But you only have to look at at this thread to see the anger of what I think are peaceful Muslims.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
There are a lot of angry people on this thread, full stop.
I'm not sure people are generally accepting of, interested in or willing to entertain counterarguments, or have a tendency to form the most cogent of arguments at times like this.
Which is why knee-jerk reactions are never a good idea.
What has been very saddening for me over the last couple of days has been seeing, once again, a general turn against Muslims and the Islamic faith, which does two exceedingly damaging things:
Firstly, it provides some degree of absolution of blame for the people who commit terrorist acts in the name of Islam. They don't commit these acts because of their faith. They commit these acts because they are very damaged, dangerous, manipulated people.
Secondly, it plays directly into the hands of the terrorist groups. ISIS and the like are absolutely desperate for the West to turn against Islam. One of ISIS's stated objectives is to drive a wedge between the Muslim population and the rest of the world. It helps them with their recruitment and radicalisation, and it moves them towards the global meltdown they are aiming at.
We cannot let that division happen.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Not many muslim people in Belfast, but I hope they feel safe..
I despair if some thick racist links all Muslim folk to an attack by a lone ex- con, who had knife and assault convictions, before he found a new reason to justify thug life.

if foreign policy is to blame for terrorism why do radicals bomb their own people in middle east? And in countries like Pakistan that we never invaded. Or Nigerian extremists who want to turn it into a Muslim state? Not expecting an answer because you ignored this around 5 times already
And I'm not denying our foreign policy has made things worse in a lot of places but it's obviously not the only cause.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
This.
Yemen, Somalia, Sudan and Nigeria have islamist lu antics killing, while kids starve, and some here blame the west, for internal civil strife.
Then, when Aleppo is attacked by Assad and Putin, critics say the West should be in there, stopping it.
Hmmm...easy life of the armchair critic.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Interestingly though, all these places are where oil is flowing. Do you agree? Assad and most Muslim leaders are just as corrupt as some of the western leaders and couldn't give a fek about the average person on the street - what's your point?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I agree.......my point is, the west is not in these zones, yet islamist extremism is rife, so blaming the west for islamism is wrong, in the main.
Western foreign policy has made things easier for Isis to grow, but now they are beaten by Muslim groups in Iraq and Syria, and the Kurds, Russia and Assad.
Some folk just distort Islam to teach weird losers how to hate the west, other Muslim folk, gay people, Jews etc.
Most Muslim people just want to live and let live, but extremists hate that too.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
I think part the answer has to be the developed world demonstrating that it will no longer deal with states and other entities that propound and exercise in law and society ideologies that are in opposition to fundamental human rights.
How can we work with, for example, moderate, mainstream Muslim groups whilst we support and work with the likes of the Saudis or the ruling families of the UAE?
How can we depose Saddam, bomb Syria and threaten Iran whilst acting like complete hypocrites when other repressive, authoritarian dictatorships who execute their own in the very same region receive our backing?
Take the UDHR seriously. Champion and build foreign policy around it. Demonstrate that regardless of the demographic, religious, racial, cultural, or economic status of a state or of its people, there are rules to follow, and by measure of adherence to those rules you shall be consistently treated.

Gal,
You haven't answered my question - prove to me nothing happens.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Not one git has bothered to come back and tell us its real tho....Bit selfish that no?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
And that's the point... Christians Islam and Judaism are all religions that provide details of what happens. No one has come back so it's a question of belief- the whole point of religion. If god showed himself or we saw the 'next life'.... the element of belief would disappear.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Do you believe in the concept of hell?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I have been there,............supporting Glasgow Rangers, past five years😠

And who decides who is to be 'booted out' and on what evidence?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
By booting out, let me say instead... Oppose extremists in all their guises.
Stop raining on my loved up parade, you😇

Let's say (I didn't believe for a minute is true) that nothing happens... fine. As a religious person I'm ok.
And if something does (which I believe it does from the quran and Hadith) then where does that leave those that say it doesn't???
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Well that would depend on how big a cnt your god is.
Or whoevers god is the real one...
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Wow. That response probably indicates that you ought to look into religion a bit more. You're not convinced with your current belief system
