Ah good old Robbie James, always remember his shirt always looked 2 sizes too small and at one point his attempt at a 'tache made him look like a cross between a member of Village People and a 70's adult film star.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Robbie was a really lovely bloke, I was really sad when he died. I honestly can't find a lot to choose between him, Bob and Wallo, they all went out of their way to have a laugh and joke every time they saw me. Wallo always used to ruffle my hair and call me cherub. Footballers were different back then, a lot more humble and grounded, just normal blokes.
Robbie used to live in the same village, along with Ian Banks who lived round the corner from Jim Melrose' brother. Muzzy lives there now and Mauchlen is in the next village and he's often seen around and about and will always stop and have a chat.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Good memories CofE, I always enjoyed how players integrated themselves into local community or village life back then. I used to live 3 doors away from Steve Whitworth in Quorn and he was a great bloke.
And more up to date it was always a laugh when Sven popped into The Woodies for a drink with Birch etc.
UTF
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yeah Muzzy has in Fleckney, he and Mauchlen have some kids coaching going on with local kids. He often nips in the pub and he used to come up the park to walk his dog on Sunday's and watch us play. He applauded a goal I scored once, that was probably my proudest moment ha ha

Its a renown haunt for old reprobates 😉
'World class', IMO, is banded about too much and has lead to epic expectations and failures at international level for England.
But this about Leicester and Mahrez and I think, more so nowadays than perhaps looking at players from years gone by, world class has different meanings for different people.
Some link it to being consistently great, consistently great over a long period, the ability to produce something ingenious on occasions, the proven ability produce something ingenious on occasions across a significant period, outstanding or equal compared to peers present day, outstanding or equal compared to players across the ages and sometimes simply world class at that point in time compared to other current players and compared to comparable stats (this is all without the issue of comparing different types of 'world class' players in terms of contribution and position)
Mahrez falls into some categories and not into others for various reasons. But it's understandable why people would suggest he was or wasn't 'world class'.
What I would suggest is, if he is 'world class' and we are basing it on a mixture of achievement, outstanding moments and current comparisons (as I'm not sure he'd even make a top 100 if we were looking at 'world class' players ever in football) or even basing it on one of those elements, I'm not sure I could argue that Schmeichel wasn't currently 'world class' or have similar potential to be.
Ps
Nobody wants to actively encourage Mahrez to leave.
Nobody is saying he isn't a good player.
Nobody is saying there are technically betters players at the club in terms of what he does.
Nobody is saying we want to swap him like for like for a player without the same qualities.
Mahrez is an excellent player but it's way too soon to call him World Class.
He is one of the very few at Leicester who can go on to be in that category if he moves to the right Club and is allowed to flourish.
Will we miss him, of course we will but everyone is replaceable and he is an extravagance that sometimes we can't afford and at other times can't be without.
Now, Kasper, he would be extremely hard to replace, we know that by how may poor keepers we have gone through.
KTF - your bullets nail it. Don't understand why people think I'm criticising Mahrez in any way!
On the world class debate, I tend to judge players on whether they are world class now. Anything else is just potential, or previous talent.
For example, Fat Ronaldo was world class, Arrogant Ronaldo still is!! Mahrez has the potential to be world class.
He could go on to great things in a top team, and there was genuine evidence last year that he could be a top player in a top team. He was the best player in the premier league and in the top 10 in the world.
Not bad!
But for me it's still potential. To get up with the likes of Suarez, Messi et al, he needs to deliver more for me. Doesn't mean to say he's not already class, he's just not world class. Yet.
Note, the only two England players I belwove have the potential to be world class are Stones and Barkley. The rest are bang average at that level. And Stones and Barkley will probably be ruined by the system anyway.
How Barkley is currently being overlooked after the season he's having is beyond me!
But today, none of them are. That why we end up lauding bang average players in the "world class" league like Kane!
I completely get why people use 'world class', perhaps in hindsight, reviewing this evaluation.
I have to be honest, and it isn't to devalue any other critique, but my instinct is to review 'world class' against previous, proven talent. In some ways, this can't be used as a constant, comparible because football has changed/evolved so much - but it shows immediately within two comments how 'world class' can mean different things. I, introspectively, often critique myself on my 'world class' view, considering the fact I've probably relied on highlights, opinions, and even my own tainted, subjective views (for example - I have no idea in reality how good I think Kante is compared to Lennon)
The one thing that has struck a chord in this thread is the comment about a ripple around the KP when Mahrez gets the ball...I just don't feel that. Maybe that makes me ignorant, confused, ungrateful, but I simply don't.
What I would also say, is that I also agree that Mahrez's performances aren't too different to last season. Yes, an obvious differential in terms of goals, but he is still wandering around, intermittent with his contribution and a luxury we can either afford, attempt to counter-balance or on occasions, be weakened by.
I agree that, from the perspective of flair skill, Mahrez is probably/possibly (I've only supported this team since 1992 - yeah I know, I did pretty well in terms of timing and future endeavours) the best we've had. But I do have to wonder how much of the fact I debate him being world class (and I do) is:
A) Down to limited comparatives at our club
B) thanks to the magnificence of Kante (which I think, like a fine wine, will be appreciated more over time)
Influence KTF. A critical word needed for players who are world class.
Gerrard single handedly won major trophies for Liverpool. Maradona did the same for Napoli and Argentina. They were able to take a game by the scruff of the neck, and single handedly influence it.
I'd argue that Mahrez did that for us 1/2 of the way through last season. He single handedly won us games that would have been draws with a moment of pure genius. As a result we tend to forget the two spells he had in the second and 3rd quarter where he did his disappearing act.
But that potential was there. You saw him influence the game all by himself. And I don't mean by a trick, by creating fear and issues for the opposition.
That is his potential. Right now, his form suggests it remains just that.
I still think he'd benefit from playing in a team where he isn't the main focus. At Leicester, teams just stick 2 men on him hoping the other won't do any damage. You can't do that at Barca!!!
Again, just another great riposte to show how wide 'world class' can be as an idiom.
I would argue that Mahrez's influence was still heavily 'influenced' (ironically) by the team around him which allowed for him to appear so single handedly influence. Without the team/formation/morale/tactics - the same player has suffered (I'm sorry, I just don't see this copy and paste argument of 'he is now doubled up on' S being true).
For me, world class players are going to shine in the majority of teams and certainly when a change has inadvertently exposed them more as opposed to restricted them.
Apologies, that came across like I was arguing back agAinst your point whereas I was just expanding/utilising it to provide further views

Solid debate KTF. It's good to have afootballing thread.
I actually do believe he's being doubled up on. But he's also being let down by his team who should theoretically then have a man over. I've not been able to that spare man much until the last 4 games!!!
I guess our pressing game in general means that Mahrez being doubled up on (I'm still not sure I see it in such a radical reflection this year compared to last) is to the detriment of our tactics as perhaps it means we don't look to actively (or at least proactively) utilise that spare man in the same way as a team who doesn't play in the same way as we do.
My main critique of Mahrez at times, is that he reminds me of Joe Cole at times (early 2000s) he can often be provided by space by incredible hard work by players around him (heskey for England in cole's case) and also on occasions, pass as a last resort/after a player has begun to marked, post:making a good run.
I may be being incredibly harsh, but I think this is/should be coupled with the positive Labelling of 'world class'.
Too often, world class players are labelled such and then any discrepancies to this title are tarred against the players around them
I think you put Marhez in a world class team he will be at that level. Its not been doubled up this season it's been three players on him and his defensive duties.
Take away those and stand back and enjoy.

I couldn't have put it better myself. World class players adapt and find a way to beat whatever challenge is put in front of them.
Mahrez isn't consistent at all, he has parts of his game that are good but not very good, let alone world class. This isnt denying that he has been fantastic for us, he has been a breath of fresh air but being very good for us and being world class are poles apart at the moment where Mahrez is concerned.

Right now Mahrez is the worst player in our "team" because everyone else has got back to last season's form but he hasn't, he's still "getting back to his best".
CoE you really don't like Marhez.
Guys you go from wolrd class to comparing him with the best footballer in the world. Keep moving those goal posts.
What is it about him CoE you are saying he is the worst player in the team worse than Vardy worse than Morgan of Fuch and Huff have been.
Class is permanent form is temporary and you don't seem to have the class to except it or are you just trying to pick another fight with me?
As fans of outside Clubs would say, one Season doesn't make any player world class, they have to show it Year in year out to truly be classed as World Class, Mahrez definitely falls into this.
Can he be World class, 100% he can
If things go right.
He is 26 and has had one good season, he is NOT world class.

Why does everything have to revert back to you and thinking people are having a go?
CofE just voiced a different opinion, how is that trying to pick a fight ffs!!!
Then you have the temerity to accuse him of not having class.
If it was tongue in cheek then it doesn't come across that way.
As for Mahrez class is permanent but Mahrez needs to produce " world class" form regularly before it becomes class.
The truth is that if Mahrez was world class then ALL of the big clubs would be tripping over themselves to sign him and he would be a regular in their starting XI. But that's not the case.
UTF
Right now Mahrez is the worst player in our "team" because everyone else has got back to last season's form but he hasn't, he's still "getting back to his best".
DDDD do you think this is not a bit over the top?
Have you read his posts about Marhez i am asking the question. I notice when he is rude to me you don't critis him
Nev
IMO they are all now performing at 90-95% and its hard to accuse any of them of being worse than the other, so I disagree with any performing "worse". But Mahrez has a habit of flitting in and out of games and needs to learn how to adapt to being the focus of the opposition, when he does this his stock will rise higher again. We have seen glimpses over the last few games, long may it continue.
Yes I have read all the posts from us all, and this post was actually about football and people having differing opinions.
No need to accuse anybody of having no class!!
Give up with your racist crap Nev, you're talking shiitt as usual! Is that Classy DDDD ?
No Nev not classy.
But this thread was sticking too the subject until you began implying that if it was Vardy (or another English player) then our opinions would be different. Which implies our opinions are based on race not fact.
When you imply that you cannot expect people to take that on the chin.
But after that the posts over the last few hours have been sticking to the subject until your post.
It would be great if we can have a thread that sticks to the subject without you, BS or CofE getting personal.

Don't you think Messi gets doubled and tripled up on? If you ever watch Barca you'll see he's crowded almost every time he gets the ball but he finds a way past them all. That's the difference between world class and good.
