Depends on size.
£500 will get you a pretty good 40 inch model but if you want anything bigger and want to avoid budget brands, you'll need to spend a bit more
Do your research - decide exactly what features you need and more importantly, which ones you DON'T
I too will be looking into a new TV, but will probably wait till the new year, 4K is certainly the way to go and I am very interested in the Oled tech out there.
£500 will certainly buy you a 4k TV, but it's features and picture may be lacking, I think £700 to £800 would be a reasonable starting point.
The Samsungs, LG's, Sony, Panasonic, are big names for a reason, So that is where i'll be looking, Oled is my preferred choice at the moment, but Samsungs quantum dot is starting to show promise, but they are not cheap.
HDR (High Dynamic Range) is desirable too, but £500 might fall short.
Can't really offer any suggestions, as I haven't been looking recently, but I would suggest pushing the boat out a little more to get the features you want.
Good luck in your search
Yeah I was looking in and around 40-43". I was planning to add a sound base too. I think i might have to up my budget and not let on to the missus. Sure she'll not know either way

Found the Sony implementation of iplayer/ Netflix etc poor. It appears it runs out of memory really quick and doesn't flush it well.
Shame as the picture is superb.
I bought this last year for £800. As you will see you can now get it for £649.
The 40" model is £562.
I use it for SkyHD, Amazon Prime, Netflix, iplayer, 4OD, PC, and PS4 (games and blurays).
The picture quality is sooperb

I also bought a Sonos soundbar and some Sonos Play1 speakers as well but they are not necessary.
I must say I own two Panasonics at the moment, had them years with no problems and great picture quality.
I think Wiretapper's might be a decent shout
Cracking tv wiresnapper.
I may look at buying one of those as i want a 4k tv with my ps4 pro!
Ive had a panasonic plasma since 2009 and its still working brilliantly.
Was top of the range 1080p and picture is still fantastic with ps4 and netflix etc.
greg, I don't think this is an HDR TV, so wouldn't make the most of your PS4.
But then I'm still using a 1080p panasonic, and this TV does look great value.
I would wait a bit if you want 4K for that price (although I don't think you'll get much benefit unless you sit very close to the screen).
Bear in mind the bezels are so small nowadays, you might be able to go a lot bigger in terms of screen size but still have the same overall TV size if that makes sense.
Of the current ones and if you really want future proof, then I'd get the 49" Samsung ks7000.
Greg, keep the plasma and don't change until you can afford OLED or wait for hdr to improve a bit. Plasma is still better than most.
Panasonics and Samsungs are generally the way to go. I'd give a slight edge to Panasonic as they seem more robust to me.
Personally, I don't see the need for a smart tv, my ps4 is always hooked up to it anyway. Picked up a nice 32 inch samsung for about £180 a few months back.
Have a hunt around, see if you can spot any bargains. It's always worth gong into stores and saying "I can get this cheaper online" see if they're willing to haggle.
New Sony is good too but you pay for it!
I have two philips tvs since 2007 !!!!! 1000 total dollars paid for them
Gotten my money's worth for sure, but I have the contrast turned down in order to spare the backlights

Have they sorted the frankly awful Netflix and iplayer implementation? I.e. Doesn't crash every time you try and load a video?
No, the os is still pretty rubbish in comparison to others.

Can't fault picture quality.
But the apps just don't run well at all.
