Boateng I wouldn't say is an upgrade on Lovren.
He struggled at City and hasn't proved he can step up to Bayern level. A maybe but no certainty there.
Leverkusen were woeful at the back last season so Tah would be a massive massive risk and unlikely to meet what we need for several years if at all.
De Vrij isn't better than Lovren IMO, he's good but so is Lovren.
Manolas I have always liked but he looks a defender suited to a different style of play when I have seen him.
Benatia is all hype and has never done anything as well as having injury problems.
I don't think any of those fit as being clearly better than Lovren. VVD is clearly better, both statistically and more subjectively.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Having read this, I just think you rate Lovren more than I do.
I've seen Lovren have great games and poor games, plus plenty in between. Personally I think he's a big CB who doesn't necessarily use his size to dominate physically and is prone to confidence issues (or panics).
He can be great when he's on his game but we want to consolidate top 4 and push on to the league. I'm just not sure he's consistently of the quality we need.
Boateng left City at 22, way too early to judge a CB in my opinion. By point of comparison; Hyypia wasn't at Liverpool at that age and Carragher was a LB.
I think it's worth noting that Lovren, to me at least, looks to be improving. His skill set for a cb is actually very good so it's just about consistency.
I do feel he is a bit of a scape goat and there is no debate to be had that when partnered with Matip our defence is sound.
I also think it is worth noting that there is a litany of CB's who have come from abroad with good reputation and basically fail and there are also many (like Boatend and Savic for example) that leave our shores and all of a sudden become good at football again.
In summary I think, yes, we need another cb but also in Lovren we don't we have a player who is not half as bad as some people on here make out.

I've never rated Boateng tbh. Dece on the ball but I don't think he is particularly better either.
Obviously...cos Messi rinsed him that one time.
No I just don't particularly rate him. I think he is quite good at a lot of things but excels at nothing. Can you think of anything that he excels at as I just find him a bit lightweight myself. Could say the same about Lovren I guess but isn't that the point?
Lovren was improved last year, that's true. Fairly low base though (relatively speaking).
There is an element of scapegoating but there's also a body of evidence behind people's frustrations. He probably gets blamed more than he should but there have been plenty of times when criticism is fair as well. Similar to Mig in that respect.
I'd keep him at the club but I struggle with the idea that we can't do better. And I'm certainly not as confident in his abilities as some on this thread.

I can't claim to have evaluated him in-depth but I'd say he's pretty quick and his passing is really strong. I don't think it's a coincidence that he really started to perform consistently under Pep. I'd always seen him as quite strong actually.
He definitely struggled with consistency earlier on in his career though. Now I think it's just that Hummels is that bit better so he can't make the first 11.
I just think defending is a lot harder than it used to be.
In the 90's and 00's most teams played a largely tactical game not so focused on pressing and attacking.
Most teams today play an expansive attacking game, with a few exceptions. Defenders often become the scapegoats because of that, whereas in reality it's just they don't get the same level of protection that defenders in the 90's did.
They can't foul as much as they used to be able to get away with, and they are left 1 v 1 with quick and skilful attackers a lot more often.
I think people see defenders playing well in less competitive leagues where they don't get exposed as often and think they would be better than our players, when in reality they would get exposed more often and wouldn't be any better, especially in a new league.
We have a defender at a great age with years of experience of our league who is improving and half our fan base want to bin him off because he makes some
mistakes.
I say be careful what you wish for.
We need a clear improvement on Lovren, not another player of the same standard who will need 18 months to get used to English football.

Completely agree with this. Defending is harder today both in terms of the attacking mindset and the pressure forwards are putting on defenders by pressing high up the pitch.
I think pace is a much more important attribute for defenders now than it was 10 years ago. You can't just take out an attacker if he beats you for pace anymore. You'll be in the book and off the park before you know it.
Also on top of being exposed more often they also have to think about how they use the ball a lot more.

The gambling is exactly what Klopp wants. Aggressive, front foot defending (see Matip against West Brom where mig saved well from Phillips).
That's tactical and how Klopp plays and wants his defenders to play. They won't always get it right but when they do we win the ball back while the opposition are in offensive mode and if our attackers are in the right positions we can break quickly.
The goals we can easily stop conceding with a new defender are the set piece shambles goals like the Everton one and the Palace winner.
That's why we want/need a VVD type who is a monster in the air, literally the best in the PL in the last 2 years. Someone who will clean everything out and stop those panic goals from happening by giving others confidence.
I don't think many of the players suggested as alternatives to VVD fit that profile.
A player who looks like he very much will do is Mawson at Swansea. I hope we are scouting him for the future. He's great in the air and is playing for an expansive ball playing team not a defensive one. He's not ready yet to make the move to a top club but he probably will be in another year or two.

Yes, he's a starter for the european champions and probably the most glamorous team in the world. He's universally rated and RM kept him despite heavy (alleged) interest even when Pepe was starting with Ramos because he's consider the future of their defence.
I'd say our chances of signing him would be pretty poor. In fact I'd say the chances of it happening are about the same as me being offered the job as the Foo Fighters lead guitarist. And I'm a terrible guitarist.
Now I think it's just that Hummels is that bit better so he can't make the first 11.

He was injured most of the season. He played with Hummels when fully fit.

Has Javi Martinez not been playing? Thought he and Hummels were first choice?

Javi Martinez played because Boateng was injured most of the season.
