If VVD WANTED to come to LFC, as many claim he does, then he should stick in a transfer request to join us, and no other club. If he hasn't, then, why?

The Echo reports this morning that Southampton will refuse sale to us, no matter the offer is, and that FSG, having come close to a transfer penalty from the FA following the initial approach to the player without going through the proper channels (shock, horror!), have decided to end their interest in signing him.

Good. There's plenty more fish in the sea.

If he hands in a transfer request and we bid highest, I'm sure they will sell to us.

I don't know who these other fish in the sea are but we've tried numerous defenders in the past load of years and have never found the right combination. VvD seems to fit everything we're looking for. Should we go through three years of buying three £20m defenders and be back at square one again or should we buy one defender at £60m who fits what we're looking for?

I know which one I'd choose.

I don't think the VVD saga is over yet.

I really want VVD as TOOR says he seems to tick all the boxes of what we need, also Klopp has clearly identified him as a priority target along with Keita so I would like to see the club go out and get the busienss done.

I may be wrong in thinking this but once the whole VVD thing kicked off the trasfer talk surrounding us went quiet, I mean genuine talk of moving on potential targets, even the Salah deal was quiet for a couple of weeks, I wonder were the club putting the brakes on to ensure no other potential targets would go the way of VVD and Saints?

Now there seems to be allot more concrete talk of transfers, maybe the club is now confident no rules have been broken on other targets so are now progressing them more agressivley.

The talk of Ox Chambo is back on too.

I'd be somewhat sure that there are better defenders out there that are worth less than £70m rather than Van Djik. Would be ridiculous to call him the 4th most expensive player of all time, even in today's market. Not sure he is nailed on what Liverpool are looking for either, not after similar talk with Lovren.

Keita would be a good signing to the Liverpool midfield as Salah is to the front line. Still believe they need better defenders at cheaper prices.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

If you're sure then name the names
Just to profile VVD:
- one of the most dominant in the air
- genuine leader
- excellent pace
- deals with strong and technical players equally well
- superb positioning (hence his interceptionrate is high)
- asset during defensive and offensive corners
- very good passing range
- can build up from the back
- composed, clean tackles (doesn't get booked often)
- can dribble and gives a little extra in times of need going forward
- can play in a 3 or 4 man backline and with space in back
- virtually no weaknesses

I'm curious to find out which names you can come up with. To me vvd is the new Vincent Kompany.

TOOR, re:VvD, didn't we think the same about Lovren before he came to us, greatest thing since sliced bread etc.? I'm not against your view, I'm just making that observation.

There are a great number of African/South American talents on the market. I wouldn't be surprised if Jurgen picks out a player who most of us haven't known of his existence. I confess, before they arrived, I'd never heard of Suarez or Firminho.

I'm still not convinced that van Dijk is all that he's made out to be.

If he is as good as some people on here think he is then the likes of RM, Barca, PSG and Bayern would all be sniffing round.

The fact that they aren't would seem to back up my scepticism.

RM are reportedly looking at Sokratis Papastathopoulos from Dortmund.
Barca are reportedly looking at César Azpilicueta from Chelsea.
Bayern are interested in Aymen Abdennour from Monaco.
PSG seem to be only linked with forwards atm.

It would appear that those 3 players will cost quite a bit less than VVD so why are Liverpool so intent on giving even more money to Saints for a player who isn't even on the radar of the European giants?

He may be the best CB in the PL but he is far from the best in Europe. Most of the top CBs in Europe are in their late 20s, early 30s so with VVD only being 25 you'd expect maybe one of the bug boys to come in for him to replace one of their aging stars.

Jeez, RM have been playing Pepe this season (18 games), the guy's contract runs out in a couple of days and he's 34. Why would they not be interested in VVD?

I imagine price has something to do with that.

Also it's more about VVD skill set. Is there a better header of the ball and is that what specifically LFC need?

RM, Barca and Bayern don't tend to pay huge fees for defenders.

I believe it used to be policy for RM to buy the stars for attack and use the academy for defence. That was the galactico era so it might have changed but I think of the top 10 defender fees, Bayern have Hummels at £30m, Barca paid similar for Alves and RM I think Ramos is still their most expensive defender, that was a decade ago and doesn't make the top 10.

RM have been preparing for Varane to take over from Pepe for a few years so I'd imagine that's why.

What a stupid remark. VVD is virtually never injured and plays a lot of games, even those games where you normally rest your star players. The one injury he did get was from a dirty Vardy tackle and has been sidelined ever since. He's not injuryprone.

So because the elite clubs outside of the premier league have shown no interest validates scepticism? Strange reasoning, especially since the elite clubs in England are willing to spend big. That's impressive for someone who only has 2 seasons of premier league experience.

You could also ask yourself why they aren't making a bid for Boateng, Bonucci, etc. You also have to consider what players they already have and how much need there is to improve the cb position.

Frankly you make a poor argument. It would help if you give a more detailed opinion why you have doubts and on what areas.

It's so funny how jealous the Spurs lost are that we can afford to blow money.

They're currently in the market for a £3m 19year old nobody from Barca

#deulofeuMK2
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Why would we be jealous? We actually get value for money players that consistently outperform the bang average ones that Liverpool blow their big bucks on. £40m for Salah ffs, because what you really needed was another second tier wide attacking player when you shipped nearly 50 goals last season.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Janssen, Sissoko, Soldado, Lamela to name but four which come straight to mind.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Well if you take that approach then it negates the original comment - we can afford to blow money, so again why would we be jealous.

Yes, we eat them, they're easy prey. You don't see anybody eating lions...or Liver birds for that matter.

As I have already said, RM have been using a 34yr old Pepe this past season and his contract runs out in a couple of days. You'd have thought if VVD was as good as is being touted then he would be a good replacement for RM.

Van Dijk is younger than both Boateng and Bonucci who are also on long term contracts and already at 2 of Europe's elite clubs. Neither of whom are going to sell a prized CB to a CL rival.

Top notch CBs are almost as rare as rocking horse shіt so any that become available are normally on EVERY top team's radar.

Also when have the likes of RM, PSG, BM ever worried that they have too many of a type of player. Just like Chelsea, these teams have been known to sign top players just to stop rivals getting them.
