So we're signing Matic...

Hopefully a move can reinvigorate his career too. While some fans might not be happy and he may not be the type of player they want he is at least a player the manger knows fully and will know exactly what he can get from him and how he can fix issues he sees within the side. Of course Jose may be wrong and it may backfire but I will at least wait and see what he can do for us first, especially when the manager knows exactly what he can offer.

started 65 of Chelsea's 76 PL games they won those 2 titles.
============

This is pertinent and you could argue he was keeping Fabregas out of the side.

More down to Conte being defensive than Matic being a better footballer, though.

It'll be a terrible signing.

He didn't keep him out of the first title, they were a pair. This season Conte chose him over Cesc because he felt he offered what he wanted especially in terms of control, as I imagine Jose does. Also with us, Matic in theory should enable both Herrera and Pogba to be more offensive which is key.

I don't remember manyUInited fans laughing at Chelsea resigning him at the time either. He was being highly rated and many United fans felt he was just what we needed. I guess 3 years later and 2 PL titles and playing for a rival makes him less exotic. I'm not saying he will succeed but I think it is very possible and I'm gonna wait and see before righting him off.

Oh I don't think he's a better footballer

But systems bring results. I don't think it will be a terrible signing just an option and as said he's really not a bad passer of thd ball at all. I think he'll perform better in a three as well.

Two and a half years of poor form makes him less exotic.

You don't think £40m for a bloke approaching 29 that has been in poor form for two and a half years is a terrible signing?

posted on 26/6/17

I wouldn't want us to sign him tbf

This is hilarious. All my United mates are raging 😂

£40M for Matic 😂 I had no idea he was 29 either. Makes it even better

Maybe Matic is just a massive grass and Jose wants an inside man.

So he was poor for Chelsea starting 30 of their 38 title winning games this season as well as poor for half the season the time they won the league before that? Why the f-ck was he starting every week then?

Also regarding his age and his style I don't think it's a big deal, he's never been fast so loss of that isn't an issue. Also 29 is often the region of your peak so IF he can get back to his top form and be an important (not exciting) player for 2-3 seasons then I'll be happy.

He isn't being bought to score or create, he's being brought in so others around him have more freedom to shine, as he did at Chelsea.

Chelsea's poor options in midfield for the first title winning season. Similar last season in terms of defensive midfielders. Conte's reluctance to start Fabregas is pretty baffling seeing as Matic hardly protects the back five.

29 should be his peak but seeing as he hasn't been at that level for a few years I'm inclined to believe he's just past his peak, so don't really see him being able to perform for two or three seasons.

He's not fast but he looks noticably slower than he did even two years ago and it's exposed him off the ball massively.

If it's true we are going to sign him there's a reason for it: he's not good enough anymore and Chelsea want to get rid.

This isn't like when they got rid of Mata, De Bruyne and Lukaku.

29 is old for a cm.

If this is our only midfield signing of the summer I'll be quite disappointed.

Get someone like Naingolan in on top though, and our midfield options look considerably better than they did last year

Fans don't usually get excited about the signing of DM's,

Equally if it's true Jose wants him while there seems to be other options out there then there must be a reason.

I'm not saying he will succeed if indeed we do get him but to excuse him starting 65 of Chelsea's 76 title winning games on there simply being no one else good enough to take his place seems rather ignorant of the fact he was a part of both title wins.

I think he could work, not saying he will. Jose could have it completely wrong and if it is then he'll likely lose his job.

If Jose gets him to top form we've got a class midfielder. Way too premature to be throwing toys out of prams.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
We've been talking about getting him back to top form for nearly 3 years now, don't hold your breath
----------------------------------------------------------------------

2 years ago you won the title with Jose, not 3...
----------------------------------------------------------------------
He declined half way through the title seaso.

But he only performed to a high level in half of one of those seasons. I'm judging him on his individual performances in a title winning side and it's not good viewing. The fact Chelsea won the title with him in there is neither here nor there. They had much better players in the side.

I saw Man United win the title with shiiiiit midfields, so I will never buy that argument.

People complain about the fee but don't present what they consider a fair fee

How much should a guy who's won the Pl twice in the last 3 seasons be and someone who played 35/38 times this past season for an all conquering side cost?

£10 million? £20 million?
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Given how bad bad he currently is and the fact he's old I think 10 mil is more than a fair fee.

But we didn't really win titles with midfielders playing as regularly as Matic has in his 2 title wins. He wasn't poor this season, he just wasn't up to his form when he first joined them. He was still doing what was asked of him from Conte which allowed others around him to do more further forward.

Also, clubs do often sell players they feel they no longer need for them to go on and still be very good. Matic has shown he has it in him to be a very good player, he also doesn't seem to have injury problems or be old. Jose also knows exactly what he can offer but as I keep saying that doesn't mean he will, but I won't right him off just yet.
