I'm a bit torn on this one.

I always liked the fact that United had a huge following and were popular just about everywhere (it used to be seen as a good thing).

But at the same time I find it hard to imagine supporting a club to which you have no geographical or family ties.

For those with those ties it means more it has to do when you live amongst it.

You don't need to be a member of a supporters club you just go to the match or your local.

"Mancunian, so am blue of course!"

Pretty much implying the same point as Joey Barton

A lover of football will probably support a local team plus perhaps a Prem team because the Prem/Europe is the top cream and where the best football can be seen. That's what lovers of the game want to see.

Its kinda like saying you shouldn't watch Hollywood movies or shows, watch local ones and support yout own industry when the difference in quality is a few million miles.

Basically the league is entertainment and is packaged and marketed as such the world over with resounding success.

Its funny that European fans will love their clubs packaging the league as a commodity and raking in the money that allows them to mop up the best players from all over the world, taking away quality from other leagues and then turn around and say only locals should follow the club when the rest of the world leagues are left a joke.

Its ridiculous IMO. The European leagues are becoming world leagues and local fans will have to put up or ship out because their own clubs value the international market as it has or will soon surpass local markets.

'International fans' will soon be more important than locals in a commercial sense. Atmosphere doesn't generate income unfortunately and match day revenues are not even a drop in the ocean now and merchandise sales are going up worldwide.

It's funny when you do it, and moronic when Joey does it?

I'm not sure Joey's being entirely serious, either. His ability to generate a reaction is what's getting him journalism work.
Doesn't have to make sense....
