for one of my favourite films, City Of God.......Fernando Meirelles
Spielberg- no one does popcorn movies quite as well.
Stone- great films, platoon is the very best Vietnam, probably war movie period.
People often confuse directors with cinematographers, often when a film 'looks' great- it's the cinematographer that's framed, lit and created those beautiful sshots.

Hal Hartley for henry fool and sophia coppola for lost in translation. Both incredibly beautiful films.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Henry Fool is in my top 5 movies ever
Great choice Admin. Parker Posey is a babe
Platoon was good. Apocalypse Now was great.
Deer Hunter is the best Vietnam film imo.
Sure I'll get some stick for this, but mine is David Lynch.
Twin Peaks, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me, Blue Velvet and Mulholland Drive - all superb. Yes, they're weird, even pretentious, and they can be a tough watch. But these films touch strike an emotional chord with me like few others.
So does INLAND EMPIRE but that's the strangest of all. Not sure what's going on for most of it

Alt off the time.. yes. The likes of Nolan and Kubrick are control freaks though... They are/were very hands on with the DoP
Speaking of DoPs... Roger deakins is top of his game... Sicario was stunning

Highly recommended. Colin Farrells breakout role and Joel Schumachers comeback film
Talking of war films, it got me thinking of M*A*S*H*. People talk about what they think is the best to series/drama they have watched. That is right up there for me. Not been anything else quite like it. The balance of humour and drama was excellent. And the theme tune was dark and appropriate.

Deakins is great, impressive back catalog. Sicario was a film I wasn't expecting much but turned out to be brilliant.
Apocalypse bow as best war film, hmm it's close to platoon, just I think could identify the stereotypes of the soldiers better, which is s bizarre reason, but it certainly worked well. AN is a little bit too out there, still superb.

I met the star of that back in the later 1990s, during the filming of, the American, in dublin.
1. Tarantino
2. Scorcese
3. Nolan
4. Spielberg
5. Ridley Scott.

Deer hunter is overated. The directors star went really high after, then he went insane on his next film, one of the biggest flops ever, went incredibly overbudget, ridiculously so. Some of the reasons were building a whole town as the setting, and the director insisting that they waited for days, weeks, halting filming, until he had the perfect skyline for s shot. Madness. I don't think he made another film after that.

Full Metal Jacket. Forgot about that. Great film. Hamburger Hill was another that I enjoyed, but not as good as the others. Still put Deer Hunter top of the tree.
Platoon is great. Not just a war movie. A struggle for one mans soul between two warring ideals
On a De Palma rant, I must recommend Casulaties of War
I was wrong he did make other films, but that post see hunter movie bankrupted the studio itcwas so over budget. Heavens gate I think it was called.

Full metal jacket and apocalypse now just don't quite grip me as much as platoon, there's something a little wierd about AN that even though brilliant detracts it for me. Probably the best looking war film though, looks great in places.
R.Scott, very good visualist but not a good storyteller.
