Easily Scorsese for me.
Then probably Tarantino, whose films I enjoy, but clearly seems to divide opinion.

Then probably the Coen brothers. Kind of inconsistent, but they've done at least half a dozen memorable great sheite. "The Big Lebowski", "Fargo", "No Country for Old Men", "Inside Llewyn Davis" (my favourite), "True Grit", "A Serious Man".

This.

Don't get me wrong, Ridley is responsible for 2 of my most favourite films, but if anything he is the overrated one. More less good stuff than good in the last 15 years. Whereas Scorsese is the opposite.

Scott's been a tad too prolific recently and come up with tons of mediocre viewing. "The Martian" was excellent for me though. Was surprised by how good it was.

I wouldnt class A Serious Man as one of the Coens strongest of films. The dryness was evident but the lack of wit and charisma was lacking and I was always hoping for the tempo to pick up.

I would have Raising Arizona as one of their strongest films.

R.Scott is a great visualist when it comes to world building.Argaubly still one of the best.
And he's also a Director who's steeped in culture and Art history.
You only have to see in his recent two Alien films the amount of references he throws at the screen. From Milton,to Blake and then to Böcklin Ridley still has a extremely efficient eye for the details. It's unfortunate then that the cohesion of a good story and characters bypass him.

If I were to write up a list of my top 20 directors he probably wont be their but that's not to discount him because, when the elements do come together for him,he does make very entertaining, interesting films.

Tarantino
Mallick
Burton
Boyle
Miyazaki
Kubrick
Scorsese

If pushed for one, I'd have to say Scorsese.

Agreed on Fargo.

Luc is a tad tricky though. Leon, 5th Element, Nikita, Unleashed...all great

Loved Valerian for all of it's flaws. Takes risks and I appreciate it.

Apart from the obvious ones, 2 that I love that you probably don't always see are Hal Ashby and Walter Hill.

Ridley Scott is right up there with the best for me.

Most over rated is Marty.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

You rate Ridley ahead of Scorsese?

Interesting

...............

Bit late on the reply. All a matter of preference really. Remember, you have DePalma over him yourself.

I have never come out of a cinema after watching a Scorsese movie and thought to myself, wow, I have to see that again.

Blade Runner and the Martian just to name two are Ridley Scott movies I never get tired of watching.

Other fave directors for me are Peter Jackson, Speilberg, Sergio Leone and Guy Ritchie.
