I am a fan of Gomez. Have been since I saw his debut when he looked calm and assured.

However, he's several years behind the likes of Stones on his development and you see the grief he gets. If we go with him then we've all got to accept the errors that come with learning.

Poor comparison in my estimation, Can. Stones has yet to impress.

Give Joe a go.

I am happy Gomez is getting some game time while Clyne has been out at right back and as a CB during less important domestic cup games. The idea that we would start Gomez alongside Matip in the league or Champions league would not be good. Gomez can't bring the leadership to the defense we need. To be fair to lad he is only 20 having missed a fair amount of footy due to injury. Had we not had the injuries / lack of CB options i.e Sakho replacement, he might of gone out on loan to another premiership side to get more experience playing at the top level at CB which is position where experience is generally key. Given our team's defensive issues putting Gomez in that position could damage his career after a run of bad games.

Yet to impress you perhaps, impressed plenty of others.

As defenders there a similarity in terms of assurance on the ball, confidence in ability and calmness. It will lead to mistakes when they're young unfortunately.

Can either he or Matip play as a left sided CB?

If not, it's probably not a great idea. CBs usually prefer a particular side.

If Hendo is providing cover for the defence even Baresi and Costacurta would look vulnerable.

Ive heard this said a lot, but i cant think of any goals this season that were not basic defensiver errors

Plenty of errors yes but we get hit on the break too easily. We concede goals not just from set plays but throw ins.

Yeah mf is to blame as well. They don't really cover the area in front of the back four at all. Hendo and wij should be busting a gut to make sure the area in front if the cbs is filled.

Didn't Gomez made his debut (or his first few games) at LB for Liverpool? He looked good. No idea if he should be thrust into the spotlight unless the manager feels he's ready (or lost complete faith in the other two mentioned by the Op). It could be seen as genius if it works but also would look bad on the manager for putting him in if he makes costly mistakes. If the fans allow him to make mistakes in the Hope that he improves, then it would be something that should be tried.

I am willing to give it a go and said it for a while now. I think that is his natural position quick and is strong. Terry ayer for chelsea at young age as cb and became a top player. But no stress I will only at him.next to Matip and not the other 2

I'm fine with that, atleast he might actually learn from them unlike some people

It might be worth a go, but I think he's done a decent job at RB. TAA gets all the plaudits for stepping in and being able to take a set piece, but he will learn obviously, but he seems to get skinned quite a lot and his crossing against Burnley was poor on a few occasions.

Gomez is a RB that can actually defend. But I suppose Gomez at CB and TAA at RB can't be something that will hurt and surely both will improve over time.

posted on 22/9/17

I keep saying this but our 2nd best right back is Milner.

We should not waste Gomez at RB when he can play at CB and progress.

TAA still has too many holes in his games. Defending is very suspect. I don't get how our number one LB last season can't get a game at RB?

Should have bought Harry McGuire or Davison Sanchez, would have been perfect for Liverpool... Players who put defensive duties first

Only if they played for Southampton

Davinson Sanchez I can agree with. Half of the price of Van Djik for a younger player who Klopp can and likely will improve and has played in a European final so has good experience for his age. Missed a trick there.

Not Harry Maguire. Think he has found his level in the PL. Signing Maguire for his defensive duties would be like signing somebody like Ryan Shawcross. Found his level at mid table.

Maybe but given the amount you have the ball, you don't really need a "Beckenbauer" type.. You just need someone who does the simple things well & conceontrates.... defending isn't brain surgery. Chasing VVD for stupid money was pointless & totally short sighted. Its a shame because you have some fantastic players. Of all the saints players u signed over the years, you missed the 2 u really needed.... Wanyama & Toby Alderweireld

Ok...

so Joe gomez did well on the ball v leicester.

However he was under absolutely no pressure at all for 45mins.

He also was the one playing them on for the first goal.... so no. He's got to learn his trade.

My issues with a matip Gomez axis are:

1. both are strongly right footed. Neither has experience playing LCB.

2. Matip is not a talker and won't help the lad through a game.

Theres two things at play here. First if we are writing off the season fine lets do it and see if next year he's learned enough to make a difference, second we seem to be very confident that despite the evidence that matip/lovren together does wokr "ok" that its just not good enough.

How do you know gomez/matip would not be just as exposed by the crazy midfield antics we see and we are just swapping faces who are getting run at 1 on 1 and are always on the edge.

Matip seems competent with the ball and likes his occasional drives forward. Sanchez is also comfortable with the ball, demonstrated at Spurs this season as well as at Ajax last year. It's something Liverpool needed really a ball playing defender but at least both Matip and Sanchez would have been able to defend fairly well.

Liverpool really lack the protection in the midfield, it's just not the discipline that Henderson has. Good to keeping the ball moving, but he can't break up attacks or slow up counter attacks. Something a Wanyama-type player would do. Would be very surprised if Klopp didn't turn to someone like Lars Bender from Leverkusen in January, who does have the discipline to just sit in and break up the play as well as being good on the ball. Would be a worthwhile signing as a starting point anyway and he would be eligible for Europe.

To build a title winning side, you need a strong spine:

Courtois-Luiz-Kante-Costa for example

Liverpool need a quality Keeper, CB, CM and CF

GK, VVD, Keita, CF

posted on 22/9/17

Think Firmino is certainly a good option for that spine. No worse in his position than what VVD and Keita are in theirs either. Not everybody's cup of tea as an "out and out" striker, but certainly good enough imo and links with the midfielders really well. Flourishes under Klopp.

Mignolet has shown improvements, but agree Liverpool need a top class GK that can earn them 5-10 points a season, unfortunately, neither Karius/Mignolet do that for me.
