Leicester City's Ben Chillwell has been called up to replace Phil Jones aswell

England have long needed a tidy, unfussy ball-carrier in midfield.

Good luck to the kid, hopefully he gets some pitch time

The "big club" syndrome as always. They might as well have actually called up Loftus-Cheek who has done well for Palace. Or an old-head like Mark Noble. It's an astonishing watering down of standards to call up a big-club bench warmer yet to test himself consistently in weekly, competitive football.

Good God if that underwhelming loser Noble had got into the England squad over a talented youngster like Winks we might as well of disbanded the team.

Have to agree with Sherriff. I like Winks, but he really hasn't done enough for a call up.

England are a joke, but from the CM options we have if winks was playing every week he'd prob warrant inclusion.

To mention noble is laughable and Chelsea have a long list of youngsters that could have come through to improve England but have rotted elsewhere. RLC is at facking palace? If he's playing well then it's pretty irrelevant when you see how w4nk they at the minute

Winks has just played back to back 90 minute games in the CL and the Premiership, so he is not a benchwarmer.

Didn't hear you moaning abut benchwarmers when your quartert of Welbeck, Oxlaide-Chamberlain, Wilshire and Webeck were trousering caps for England when they could barely hold down a place on the bench for Arsenal.

As someone who hasn't always seen the big deal about Winks, I was impressed with him against Apoel in a match not everyone was doing so well in.

England have been crying out for a midfielder of his ilk so we should hope he can fulfil his potential.

Because you've had injuries. He IS a bench-warmer. Welbeck was an established regular Man U and Arsenal player when he was getting capped. And I've had a lot of criticism for when players like Wilshere, Walcott, Ox, Gibbs and even the likes of Chambers were getting called-up despite not playing at Arsenal. I'm even surprised Wilshere, who is yet to get a minute on the pitch in the league, didn't get a call-up.

Welbeck has never ever been an established first team player at either United or Arsenal, stop posting porkies.

A rather pathetic attempt at sematics. That Welbeck is a regular doesn't make him a guaranteed starter. As far back as Utd's title winning season in 2011/2012, when Welbeck was 20/21 years old, he made 30 league appearances with 23 of them as starts. Barring injury and recovery from long-term injuries, he has been regular for Arsenal. A bit stupid to draw any parallels between that and a player who has 8 career starts in all competitions for Tottenham.

He hasn’t

Seriously? He’s probably played about 3 games in total this season when you add up his minutes. Southgate makes the point about players not deserving call-ups and then promptly puts someone in who doesn’t warrant it. This is why people can’t be bothered with the England setup anymore and focus on supporting their clubs

He won`t get game time, it will be Horrendo pulling the strings in midfield, unfortunately.

I know. This will make me sound like a pensioner or something but every time I see an England squad nowadays and I see some of the players in there by default it makes me long for the good old days of 10-20 years ago.

Winks
Delph
Livermore
Shaw
Gibbs
Lingard
Drinkwater

All called up in the last 18 months or so despite limited games, poor form or just being outright shiiite but on the books of a big club. It’s embarrassing

I suppose getting called up for England could mean a salary increase for Winks. So good for him.
Don't think England has much of a chance if they get to Russia anyways.
But I just want all our players back from Internationals free of injuries.

And exactly how many minutes had the player Winks is replacing, Delph played this season, less than Winks I would say, so your point is invalid.

I think we are also now seeing what happens when you flood the premiership with foreign players, it means all the English players get pushed too one side for their club sides. You are then left with players that may not be regulars for their teams, but that is the nature of the beast.

Simple answer if you want more English players that are regulars for their clubs, put a cap on foreign players.

That would simply reduce the Prem to the standard of the Championship division.
A solution would involve much more - a lot more investment in youth programs etc etc.
The Brazillians like Neymar and Messi start in the streets as kids.

So if either player did not deserve to get called up, who should be called up. The Ox is getting called up, despite not playing, so you have to come up with names to replace all these so called undeserving players. Don`t just say they don`t deserve to play, without giving alternatives that do deserve to play.
