Most comments I'd read were extremely complimentary, highlighting his acting talent, and what a great Dr he'd make.

To focus entirely on his skin colour, ignoring everything else he might bring to the role might be construed as racist. Which I'm sure wasn't your intention.

Here's a thought. If you're uncomfortable watching a black actor play Dr Who, don't watch it. There's over 800 episodes, and decades of Dr Who episodes with the character being played by a white actor if you prefer.
