Well spotted. It certainly seems silverware has weighed heavily in this one, and it even looks like FIFA competitions might not have been considered.

In that regard, and in terms of the choice of 'keeper, Casillas' 3 CLs and 2 Euros make him pretty much untouchable even for Buffon or Neuer.

Zidane said that Gerrard was the best midfielder in Europe in his prime.

I'd take his opinion over a bitter Fam on here

It's astounding that one of the best players and perhaps most complete player of his generation isn't in some people's XI. At least the people who count have Gerrard in there. That's all you can expect really.

Gerrard did have some outstanding moments in the CL and captained the side in the greatest game ever.

For those questioning certain players, they did the team purely based on how many appearances they made in the UEFA team of the year. So you're not going to get players like Zidane, Cannavaro etc because half of their career was before 2000.

Regardless of whether Gerrard should be in the team or not.....he's in the conversation and that's enough really. Whether he'd the 3rd or 8th best midfielder of hia generation is irrelevant.

I watched him almost every game, let me tell you.....i can't think of another midfielder this century that could replace the impact/results he delivered at liverpool.

They would have done amazingly well in rafas 2009 team and rodgers 2014 side. But they aint winning the CL and getting to finals/semi's with Traore, Kuyt, Dudek, Finnan, Pennant, kromkamp, Smicer, Baros etc as starters or mellor, Sinama Pongolle as the bench options They probably wouldn't have done it with the good players like Hamann next to the either. People just remember his goals......his passing was better (look at the pass for garcias 'ghost goal' which should ave been a penalty and a red for cech if it didn't cross the line). His driving runs were world class and his defensive work unmatched by the other great attacking players of his generation.

Trust me....those Chelsea sides, Milan, Juventus, Inter, Barca, Madrid etc.....were no joke! The players we had should have had ZERO chance against them. Yet between 2005-2009 we won the CL once, made one final, one Semi and one quarter final and one last 16 exit.

You guys didn't all watch these games but other midfielder could have replaced Gerrard for usdirung that period......the lad took Ramos, Cassilas, Cannavaro Sneijder, Robben etc apart in the 5-0 last 16 tie! Lampard and scholes aint doing believe me!

Yeah he'd be with Zidane,Buffon,Maldini and the likes,those that should be in it but part of their careers where spent in the 1990's.

Never mind they can all look at the numerous league medals they have between them and say to themselves 'thank god we didn't have a career like Gerrard'
