Thing with Rooney is, did Rooney really compliment him that well? Did they work together like they should have? Obviously Sven played Rooney LW for England too

Top 2 is easy for me
1. Keane & Scholes
2. Lampard & Makalele
Makalele is one of the PL greats, he's the version Kante should aspire to be
Arsenal had a great spine, they had Vieira in MF, but I wouldn't say in their peak times they had an equal great alongside him if that makes sense
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Lampard and Makelele very rarely played as a midfield pair, as pointed out earlier. Shouldn't be on the list. Think the only real time they played together in a 2 was 03/04. They weren't great.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yeah I guess second in the league and champs league semi finals is no good...
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Just looking at your line-ups for that season, it's doubtful they ever played together in midfield 2. They were never a partnership. Shouldn't be on the list.
Rooney and Herrera.
Herrera was very fortunate to have such an accommodating captain as Wayne Rooney, who waited patiently for him and other new arrivals to come to terms with Louis van Gaal's new system, often to Rooney's detriment
keane and scholes are clearly #1
i feel a lot o utd fans have forgotten carrick and scholes were brilliant partnership as well. Top 10 at least.
we went from a team that could only attack to being able to control the game as well which was no small feat especially in an era where many teams started to play 3 man midfield.
carrick and scholes played as a midfield two?
Vieira + Petit and Scholes + Keane are the best pair.
Hard comparison with Chelsea's 3 of Essien, Makalele and Lampard, since they were very different eras and formations.
juninho and emerson gotta be up there

yes and for a long time
post scholes eye op and pre the season we bought hargreaves and tevez
after we bought hargreaves it looked like we were going to play 433, and we did successfully for with carrick sitting deeper
then hargreaves injury nightmare and tevez leaving meant we ditched 433 and reverted back to 442. Fletcher became more prominent especially in big games where we could not play a 2 man midfield

Dunno what you're hmming about. He is completely correct
Just think that midfield would be overrun but fair play to them if true.

They were both brilliant in possession. Very hard to overrun midfields like that.
In fairness they did have a prime Rio and Vidic behind them with Rooney and Ronaldo in front of them. But their importance to that team shouldn't be underestimated

You'll do well to overrun any midfield with Carrick in, simply because his positioning and reading of the game was so good. People often talk about how Carrick was slow/immobile, but that wasn't really true. He just didn't have to run very often. When he did actually get into a sprint he was pretty fast.
Between them they won 7 major international titles, including 2 World Cups and played in 3 World Cup Finals

Not for the same team they didn't, which is sort of the point of your article......

Alonso is one of my favourite players of the last 15 years, just class.
To answer the question, Keane & Scholes.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Alonso is a great player in the Spanish league. He dissapointed many while in the PL, though. There was never any doubt of his talents, but it wasn't the best league for him. Quite a few players fit in that category, as well as great PL players that fizzle abroad. I have to go with Keane and Scholes as well, fierce and precise and great pitch-smarts.
Keane was the best midfield 'partnership' on his own.
Far better, more valuable, more contributive etc., on his own than the other three partnerships mentioned.
Scholes was just the icing on the cake
