Stoneman reminds me of Ramprakash, not in style, but in the way they both look like they can play at Test level, but don't quite make the volume of runs. Carberry was the same on the last tour.

It's funny that you bring up Ramprakash. Is he really the right man to be our batting coach? He was a fantastic batsman but couldn't bring his quality into the test arena frequently enough.

Ramps knows how hard it is to make the step up for sure so is he the right man to help our players? I don't get the feeling he's a strong enough character to guide our batsmen to succeed.

Anyway, the selectors need to give Stoneman a chance, he's done well so far in this series, especially when you compare him to his peers. If he can maintain his average of 33.5 for the series then I'd call that a success for him.

Is was a disgrace dropping Carberry after the last ashes tour. He probably was our best batsman and looked accomplished against possibly the best pace bowling he'd ever have faced at test level.

England missed a trick not giving him a run in the side. He could have been our Warner at the top of the order.

Agree with every word of that, he didn't disgrace himself at all, who knows what he could have gone on to become?

Overton did well, he offered more support to Broad and Jimmy over Jake Ball, Alli really can't handle conditions down under, hardly looked dangerous after a fantastic last 12 months.

I'd have

Cook
Stoneman - Possibly move Bairstow and Stoneman around...
Bairstow
Root
Malan
Foakes (WK)
Alli/Crane
Woakes
Overton/Wood
Broad
Anderson

Agree about Carberry. Thought he was unlucky and yes he has been fighting a bigger battle.

I wouldn't discount Moeen just yet, it's hard to know how much his finger injury was disrupting him in the first innings and he barely got a chance in the second for obvious reasons. He did okay in Brisbane in the first innings and barely got a bowl in the second. He also scored 38 and 40 but his struggles against Lyon are evident.

I'd be happy to give Crane a go but I don't think I'd take Moeen out of the side, so it would have to be for one of the seamers and Overton would have to step aside as England aren't going to drop Broad.

Tour match up next anyway so some much needed batting practice coming up for everyone.

Alli named as captain,

Moeen Ali (capt) (Worcestershire),
Jake Ball (Nottinghamshire),
Gary Ballance (Yorkshire),
Mason Crane (Hampshire),
Tom Curran (Surrey),
Ben Duckett (Northamptonshire),
Ben Foakes (wkt) (Surrey),
Keaton Jennings (Lancashire),
Dan Lawrence (Essex),
Jack Leach (Somerset),
Liam Livingstone (Lancashire),
Mark Wood (Durham)

Would probably back that side to put in a better showing for the 3rd test.

Actually on second thoughts... Ballance, Jennings, Duckett, Ball!

Seriously though, the batsmen should be playing although presumably they think a rest would be better.

And so the drinking and fighting culture continues under the awful Joe Root.

I warned you all last bloody year. The man is a snowflake.

Who else do you suggest as Captain?

The only players guaranteed a starting place in the test team are Cook, Root, Bairstow, Broad and Anderson.

Cook only recently resigned, he wouldnt want it again.

Bairstow already has wicket keeping and batting to concentrate on, burdening him with captaincy would probably affect his game.

Broad and Anderson are coming into the twilight of their careers, appointing either as Captain would only be a short term move and no good for consistency going forward.

That leaves Root as the only realistic candidate.

Roof been far from perfect captain but he does bounce back if he makes a mistake. My gripe is he won't bat 3 which is best for the team.

Just have to stick with Root at the moment, I can't see another viable option and he's only had two tests (vs a poor West Indies and South Africa) he needs time.

He's not got all the tools to do the job, we haven't got 90+mph bowlers

Alli has a finger injury and hasn't been bowling anything like he should be.

Cook is out of form

The top order is a disaster

The middle and tail is getting blown away

Bairstow is stuck with protecting the tail and can't play his shots

Broad and Anderson are bowling well, wish we had all the tests day/night, Anderson with the new pink ball

The order needs to be moved around, we need Mark Wood in, I like Overton thought and if we bring in Crane that makes the tail longer, would mean we lose another batsman.

Perth is over for me, we need to show some fight though, make it close and competitive

History shows you need pace in Australia with the odd exception like McGrath. Larwood, Tyson, Snow, Lillee, Thomson, Johnson all instrumental in wins in Australia. It may be England do not have any apart from Wood. If so, unless Australia have a team like 2 series back in Australia, you won't win.

Overton did ok, but he is another right arm fast medium bowler.

If we had Wood and Stokes then I'd fancy us a bit more, but this will ultimately end 5-0 or 4-1.

Players need to play with freedom now, no more pressure, no moaning about sledging, just open up and play

posted on 11/12/17

Wood has joined up with the squad but he's not quite at his quickest and therefore he's unlikely to be included until the 4th test. I think all this talk about requiring pace is a bit of an excuse and if we bowl at our best, we'll be able to take 20 wickets as their batting line up is of a similar standard to ours.

Regarding the captaincy, I think Root has done alright. Putting Australia into bat was the wrong call but I think his players have let him down much more than he's let us down. His batting is below par and way below his par but he's not been awful by any stretch as he's been our best batsmen and therein lies the problem.

As for the rest of the team, don't go and give up those Ashes without a fight throughout the whole match, not just in the second half when the game is as good as gone.

posted on 11/12/17

Obviously the next Test is crucial. If England lose it the Ashes are gone. However, this is no time for panic. It seems pretty clear that Wood is not ready, so I'd expect the XI to be unchanged.

Root will remain as captain. It seems he has a bit to learn but that shouldn't be surprising.

Gunnerbegood Pakistan have had an unlimited supply of fast bowlers but have failed to win a test match in Australia since 1999.

England need someone like tremlett in 2010. Unfortunately they haven't. Wood no way the answer not done anything since 2015 forget him. The attack we have is the best available so go with that and bowl in the right areas.

posted on 12/12/17

Agreed, I think Roland-Jones potentially offered similar attributes to what Tremlett offered in 2010-11, it's a shame he got injured as it meant we picked Ball.

I think the bowlers can deliver for us as they have done pretty consistently for some time now. As I said before, it's about our batsmen, they set up victories for us in 10-11 and they need to do the same here. Cook getting a nice 150 in his 150th test match would be a great starting point.

posted on 13/12/17

Root is a snowflake. Shouldn't be anywhere near the captaincy. He was shaking in the press conference just now, sounding like a whimpering libtard.

One change for the 3rd test. Barstow bat's 6 moeen 7. Shifting the deck chairs round on the titanic.

Bairstow in before Moeen is how we should have lined up for the first 2 tests. Although Bairstow isn't batting all that well and the batting is a bit of a shambles anyway.
