What was wrong with VvD's performance in the CL final? When you say "He needed to deliver a better performance in the CL final though." what specifically are you talking about?
Of course, he COULD have done better. He could have dribbled past the entire Real team, rounded the keeper and backheeled it into the goal three or four times in a row. But realistically, what do you think needed improving in his performance?

Of course, he COULD have done better. He could have dribbled past the entire Real team, rounded the keeper and backheeled it into the goal three or four times in a row. But realistically, what do you think needed improving in his performance?

What was wrong with VvD's performance in the CL final? When you say "He needed to deliver a better performance in the CL final though." what specifically are you talking about?
Of course, he COULD have done better. He could have dribbled past the entire Real team, rounded the keeper and backheeled it into the goal three or four times in a row. But realistically, what do you think needed improving in his performance?

You could make elementary observations on his performance, for example he was drawn out of his most effective position unnecessarily on a few occasions, he was not as commanding in the air as he can be, or you could point to the moments where he sent the ball out of play as a result of being rushed and temporarily lacking composure. He still often appeared cool, but smaller tells betray his much less relaxed actual disposition, and as such he was probably a less effective performer than the previously appalling Lovren, ironically a player who has greatly benefitted from playing alongside him.

It is possible that Klavan would have not have been an adequate direct replacement, but then it's also possible he would. The point is moot. I was simply contributing to the discussion on why I believe VVD fell short of what could be expected for the most expensive defender in history.

There is no obsession with Klavan, it's simply that he would be playing if VVD was not due to Matip being injured. Therefore the actual discussion is about "Does VVD significantly improve Liverpool when playing instead?" and the answer is clearly, yes.
