Unlucky on VVD, he didn't manage to make his tackle and PSG scored, but ultimately Salah (who looked a shadow of himself today) put him in a very bad position. Hats off to Firmino though, excellent finish.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I looked at the replay and I think he did had contact with the ball. Unfortunately it was still redirected to the goalscorer.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I don't think he should carry any real blame for that one, if he did get a touch it obviously didn't do the job but he didn’t do anything really wrong.

Forward line of Neymar Cavani and Mbappe, no problem for a VVD marshalled defence

Liverpool deserved the win, but your comment completely disregards the events of the game. You described Mbappe as 'no problem', and yet he scored. Liverpool let a 2 goal lead slip, despite having most of the play, only to be saved in the final minute by Firmino.

How on earth do you consider those events to be reflective of the 'VVD marshalled' defence finding things to be 'no problem'. Your comment makes it sound like Liverpool kept a clean sheet.

I dont care who the defender is if you gave Mbappe running off you and Neymar running at you you're going to have a problem. Not a great challenge tbf, and neither was his yellow, but he was imperious in the air and considered with the ball. Great result either way.

Even Klopp was praising the defensive organisation. The first goal came from a deflection against Robertson and the second one came from another deflection that was first initiated by a Salah error. Apart from that the PSG front three didn't create that many chances because they were poor and Liverpools defense was well organised.

Looking back at the replay again vvd was anticipating a pass and Milner failed to pick up Neymar. It forced vvd to commit to Neymar so it was initially good reading from him and an unlucky bounce when he tackled:

So when Liverpool are keeping clean sheets, they are a valid measure, but when they don't, they aren't. Typical story of how statistics aren't necessarily representative.

Your brain stopped working again I see. Nobody is tunnelvisioning into clean sheets. However it is a big factor. It's time that you admit that van dijk has indeed significantly improved the defense. You're probably the only person who hopefully thought otherwise.

That's the whole point though, people quote clean sheet stats to justify their point, and when there isn't a clean sheet they use all manner of reasons to justify disregarding them. My point was always that the assessment of VVD is more nuanced, and the limited and ill informed contentions used by some are typical of the blinkered partisan view on here.

Liverpool kept a clean sheet, but a really bad tackle by VVD nearly lost it for his team when the game was on a knife edge. It was a pretty good performance from him other than that, though his form has certainly dipped

Wtf are you on about you clown, didn’t even make contact with Sane.

He planted his foot to block the cross and Sane went down.

Rock solid performance from him. Our defence has been superb this season so far.

VVD bad decision making led to the penalty.

You’re laughable.

You’re so desperate to beat VVD with something... anything..

He has improved us significantly.. you were wrong and the whole premise of your article has been blown apart.

Just accept you’ve been proven wrong - no harm in that.
Trying to justify your article is plain crazy.

Unfortunately for you, pundits and players alike acknowledge how good van dijk is. Eden Hazard is just the latest example. There is nothing subtle about his ability, it's blatantly obvious. if talkshows debate wether he is the best cb in the world should give you an indication of where he stands as an individual and in the team of Liverpool.

Talk shows just serve up controversial drivel to encourage people to call in. They know some partisan advocates who believe he is the best in the worlds, and a massive amount of people who don't. Arguments get people listening, and silly ones like the one you have mentioned get people calling in. You are just demonstrating that you have been drawn in by their tactic, just like the rest of the gullible gang.
