Are you for teams doing your team a favour?

Ah you always want to see a rival drop points no?

I don't really care who wins in games that won't impact Liverpool, but like I'd be delighted to see united or Everton win any game that helped Liverpool.

Not much of a debate in this one.

Of course I would like United to win all 38 games and then it wouldn't matter what other sides did.

But, we haven't won all our games, so if I City could have dropped points in 4 more matches we'd be in a title race.

I think we'd all like to think that our team is good enough on its own to win the league/finish in a certain position. However, the truth is, unless you get 112 points you are somewhat reliant on other teams doing you a 'favour'.

I always hope Liverpool, City, Chelsea and Spurs drop points and I'd expect supporters of those teams to feel the same way about their rivals too.

Surely part of the enjoyment of supporting a team is also seeing your rival drop points?

You have to rely on other teams taking points off teams around you, doesn’t matter if it’s up the top, down the bottom or what.

Have Swansea become the new “Wigan”? Meaning avoid relegation for a few years, then finally it catches up with you and then the only way is pretty much down.

Because I can’t see Swansea coming back if they do get relegated.

There are teams, where you think, if they go down, they’ll be back within 2 years at the most………..West Brom being an example of when I’ve thought that.

Even in 88, when we got relegated, my 11 year old self got excited about watching my club win football matches again and nobody could convince me even after a bad start we would not get promoted at the first attempt.

Now it seems like getting relegated from premier league is the beginning of a slippery slope for a lot of teams.

Yeah, you are, of course, hoping your rivals lose and you can capitalise on their dropped points, especially if there's a meeting between your teams and theirs on the horizon.

I think when people say, "you shouldn't need that team to do you a favour" is when you've essentially blown in and are relying on someone else to bail you out, a bit like United in 2012.

We went from having the title sewn up to needing QPR to do us a favour on the last day, it was ridiculous considering the position we were in. In '96 however, we were only going to claw back a 12 point deficit by other teams taking points of Newcastle, us stringing wins together, and then beating them at St. James' later in the season.

I think the two scenarios are completely different in terms of relying on other teams.

So which side do you fall on?

“Want to see rivals drop points"

Or

“No, we should be good enough to not need help."

Unusually I am fence sitter. But on this occasion I want our rivals drop point if that make any sense (nice Tim but Dim)

To -bloodred- TGI and Conte'nt.

I assume, unless you have people typing for you, you can read. In which case i'd invite you to re-read the opening 2 paragraphs.

The clue is in the words.....................

I re-read the article about 3 times before I posted because I was sure there was something i'd missed. There wasn't

I used words "I get it seems an odd question.

But I used to get told off people all the time, “Shouldn’t have to rely on others, should be good enough to win it/stay up without help."

2nd paragraph explained why i asked the question.

Yes, but the 2 answers are not mutually exclusive at all.

United this season should be good enough to finish 2nd in the league. But you'd struggle to find a single United on the planet who doesn't want Liverpool to lose tonight

But you'd want Pool to lose even if they were bottom by 10 points

The league is made of 20 teams, so to win the title you are relying on 19 other teams to be worse than you. If some of those teams do us favours along the way - inadvertently, of course - I have no problem with that.

Compare it with being a striker who wants to score a goal - if the keeper slips or loses concentration, you take advantage and don't think twice about it.

Yeah, i'd want Liverpool to lose if they were playing an ISIS XI to be fair.

But you see the point.
