The issue for both the UK and the US is not really the state of the stock-market, it’s the number of people who benefit from it
-----

Not just UK & US. Generally speaking, imo this and the environment are far and away the two most serious problems humanity faces.

That's not to say nothing should be done about other issues, but they take up so much of the media's time and attention that it's hard to shake the feeling that they're conveniently used as smokescreens to distract from the above two.

Not the subject of the thread, I know, but...

I agree. I think what people need to get into their heads to take the environment seriously is that we are not destroying the Earth we are destroying ourselves.

The Earth has had a huge variety of environments from being covered in fire, dust and lava to being covered in water. The current environment just happens to be optimal for us. If we destroy it the Earth will continue and a new environment will evolve that might be suited to another species.

Of course, despite out faults and short term approach to life, we are extremely intelligent beings so we can create our desired environment within contained spaces either on earth or in space so I guess we will continue in one form or another even if we destroy our favourable environment on Earth.

Not the subject matter - ikr!

just heard on news - social media is outraged.

I forgot those words that really annoy me: "social media is outraged" or "social media reacts" like social media is one body with a single opinion.

I cant stand "outrage" as well. Everyone seems to find little things so outrageous nowadays.

I like the word "hypocrite", but people who are infuriate me.

For example, people who say they cannot stand outrage and complain about how everyone seems to be outraged by anything; a week after writing an article on a football forum about how outraged the author was about something.

I agree its outrageous.

Tony - . Destroying ourselves, and taking down thousands of other species in the process.

Unfortunately though, a lot of people still couldn't give two schitts.

Some are understandably more worried about the here and now complications of having a job and feeding a family.

Others are just confident they or their descendants will be among the small majority colonising those new environments or boarding those spaceships.

Some woman with a buzzcut tried to have a go at me aat work today for referring to her as a woman.
=============================================================
Where does stuff like this happen?
I constantly hear stories like this, but never witness them myself.

Which places am I not going to where this kind of thing happens?

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Gender Reassignment Clinics.

Safe word. Usually just when things are getting interesting.

I do believe you are conflating

I don’t mind ‘conflate’, because it has a specific meaning for which there isn’t a commonly-used synonym.

I hate “metropolitan elite”, because it’s a politically-correct fairy-story, often used by elitists to describe a large group of people who by definition, can’t be an elite, because there’s too many of them (and some of whom are not very affluent, or influential).

And I hate workplace BS like “traction” and “synergy”.

Also hate the expression “and I” when they mean “and me”......as in “he spoke to my friend and I”.
Strangely, I don’t mind it the other way around, when “me” is used incorrectly, because that just sounds like slang (well, it does to I), whereas the other one feels like an attempt to sound “correct” without actually bothering to work out the grammar.

So, that makes me laugh. People just suddenly started doing it, for no reason.

That reminds me of another one. People used to just say "there is no way", but now feel obliged to say "there is no way, shape or form"

So, like Americans, have started saying "So, like...."

It used to be just "like" but I think its a way of extending their announcement that they are talking - probably because everyone Americans never shut up and talk so loudly that the first two words of any sentence are never heard.

Unfortunately I've heard I there and its catching on as a replacement to just "Like..."

What? Wait!
