Kieron Dyer on Paul Scholes

Scholes never said that. Scholes said he enjoyed playing on the left for England. Although he didn't play there a lot.

This Scholes on the left thing is a bit of a myth.

He was on the left of a diamond, which isn’t really the left, it’s a pretty standard modern position for an attacking midfield player.

He did play maybe a handful at most of games properly on the left. That didn’t ruin his England career though.

Who’s saying Scholes said it or enjoyed it? He was wasted on the left, he was England’s most gifted player at the time and moved out of position to accommodate lesser players.

posted on 13/2/18

He wasn't moved to the left much, would like to see the statistics but I would be surprised if he played more than 5 games on the left.

Seems to be this weird myth that everyone has started believing. Paul Scholes just wasn't that good for England.

He wasn't, which is why he was moved to the left. he was the third best midfielder and thus the two better ones were preferred in the middle. That's normal. He was also moved to the left in some games for United.

It wasn't a big deal at the time, just an excuse after Scholes was elevated after retiring. He stated it was nothing to do with him retiring and he actually loved working with Sven. It was the whole circus around playing for the national team he didn't enjoy and thus he felt if he didn't enjoy it, he would remove himself from it and that's his prerogative.

He was moved to accommodate Lampard and Gerard though, that’s a fact. Whether that was for the benefit of the team I’m not so sure and many weren’t at the time which is why it was regularly brought up even then.

The point about whether he enjoyed it is also irrelevant, the point was as Dyer is pointing out, that he was wasted moved out of position. People can disagree, that’s fine, but don’t make up history and state he played left for United and people weren’t making a deal of it at the time.

People weren't making a big deal about it at the time. Plus most of Scholes's England career days coincided with his days when he played as an attacking midfielder.

posted on 13/2/18

Wait, Lampard and Gerrard lesser to Scholes? How?

People didn’t make a big deal of it at the time because we already had two quality players in the middle. Unfortunately they completely failed as a pairing.

posted on 13/2/18

In fact Scholes only played on the left for England seven times and most of them were left of a diamond. He had like 70 caps and seven were on the left. I don't get this argument. It's just an excuse about why he failed.

"But the truth is I played on the wing for Man United too and scored a lot of goals.

"But it didn’t work out like that for England. I’m not sure why.

"The truth is I got on great with Sven. I don’t think there’s anyone who didn’t – we all loved playing for him.

"He put me in that position because he thought Frank and Steven were better suited to playing in the middle than me.

"It was his choice, and it wasn’t my business to tell him where I should play. He thought they were better than me."

Only 7 times? So you mean pretty much all of the times he played in Euro 04 and WC 06?

Also where do you have these figures and when has Scholes ever stated he’s best at scoring when left of a diamond?

No. He played there once in his early career and six times for Sven out of 36 games.

So he doesn’t say it’s his best position and he does accept he was moved out to accommodate Lampard and Gerard.

He doesn’t seem too bothered and that’s very Scholes but as Dyer is pointing out he felt it was a waste as many others agree with.

Must admit I don’t really recall Scholes being played on the wing for United?

His interview with four-four-two. Fans asked him questions and he answered them. It's freely available on the web and was quoted by numerous newspapers at the time.

I didn't say he said it was his best position.

He played on the left six times when Gerrard and Lampard played.

Gerrard probably played more games on the left.

Where did he play when Keane and Veron were the preferred partnership in midfield? I don't know the answer but then I didn't say it, Scholes did.

Yeah, they're trying to do it with Carrick now. Although not quite to Scholes lengths but then he hasn't retired yet.

He's retiring at the end of the season.
