So you're saying that there's a level Greaves couldn't do it at? There's no evidence of that at any time in his career and I'm not even a Spurs fan.

You said "nothing ever fazed him", but his record for England in tournaments was abysmal for someone of his pedigree. He was fit for the '66 final, but Hurst had been convincing when he replaced the injured Greaves and the manager didn't want to upset the balance he had discovered.

Yes, Greaves for all we know might have also banged in that hat-trick but his tournament record indicates this wasn't likely.

To me there's no difference between tournament or non-tournament performance. You're either good enough at that level or you're not and there's nothing in Greaves's phenomal international track record to suggest that he was out of his depth. His stats are far superior to Charlton (even though he was more of a midfielder), Hurst, Lineker or Rooney, all of who are perceived to be international legends for England.

Having said all that, back on the OP topic, for me Pele would be the numero uno and Bestie the number 2 but that's probably just me showing my age.

Summer, take no notice of Sheriff, he has a thing about always trying to belittle Greaves, when he has never in all probability ever seen him play.

Greaves was far from fit during the 66 World Cup, he was nowhere near his best, and Sheriff is using that tournament as a stick to beat him. Hurst scored the only goal of the semi, and Alf decided to keep a winning team. I was gutted Greaves never played in the final, but the right decision was made. Greaves was nowhere near peak fitness.

44 goals in 57 Internationals is all you need to know about Greaves.

To insult he greatest British goalscorer of all time like Sheriff does, says more about Sheriffs bitterness, than anything Jimmy did or didn't do.

Yeah, all those hat-tricks against Luxembourg, Northern Ireland and filling up his boots when England where hammering Scotland 9-3 in friendlies and qualifiers should be the best metric of judging him. Not that he scored just 1 goal in 7 competitive internationals.

Why do you think Messi, who has a a considerably superior strike rate for Argentina than Maradona gets stick for his international record? It's because he hasn't brought it to the knockout phase of a World Cup where it really matters.

He missed 3 months of the '65/66 season with hepatitis but recovered to finish the campaign strongly and went into the World Cup in good form. And in '62, he had zero physical problems before or during the tournament but scored 1 in 4 matches.

Ronaldo's best World Cup in 2002 came after missing nearly 2 years of football with just 17 Serie A appearances in 3 years. His World Cup record was 14 in 18. That is greatness at the highest level.

I’m talking about the legendary Brazilian player naradinba.
