Chelsea finished as a force?

United are slowly being hunted down, what was a dozen point gap a few months back, could be down to one point by the end of next weekend.

United are playing as well as they can, Spurs are still going up through the gears, it will be very, very close to whom comes second.

You have been better than us since SAF retired and we were a shambles. But since the last three seasons, you have not improved. You have stood still while we have. It's why, whether we finish 4th or 2nd, we're more likely to win a title before you. The other thing is, sadly, is that we can and do pay more and are hence more likely to attract players and keep our better ones. Walker has left. Rose looks like he's on the way out and so is Toby. In a season or two of more of the same you will lose other top players, unless you decide to pay them what they are worth and start winning things. Your club, if they don't change will not move up. We were in a shambles and despite that we have caught up and are looking to likely to surpass teams that are supposedly better. And we have been poor more often than not yet somehow find ourselves second.

United haven't really improved though. Spent lots of money, but your team looks if anything worse than last year. Your gimme fixtures at the state of the season enabled United to get a good start over all but City. Now it has evened out with more difficult fixtures, United are coming back to the field.

In reality considering the money Utd have spent...you could argue they've (at best) stayed still in recent times

They have improved their results this season, but playing like this I would expect them to fall back next season.

I do not think you could look back at this season and think of many what-ifs for United. They have more points than they should have probably got from games, as their XG shows.

That’s partly down to De Gea being an amazing keeper though, he saved way more XG than anyone else in the league.

Chances are he will still be an amazing keeper next season (and they might improve elsewhere, then again they might not).

Amazingly enough on the 3rd of April 2018 the stats showed Man Utd were 1st for shots on target per game and 2nd for shots per game and only 1 team allowed fewer shots on target per game but Man Utd were one of the lowest scorers in the league with 42 goals and had just scraped into 5th for 1 week lol. If we had the same conversion rate last season we would have won the league easily.

We got same conversion rate as Man City this season. If we had that conversion rate last season we most likely would have won the league. We even gave up on the league with a month to go as well lol.

United's Expected Points is 14 less than they have.

The only team that is close to that is Burnley, which is pretty fitting

We have improved. Unlike Tottenham, we haven't stood still. We address the issues from last season, hence a lot of draws from last year are wins this. I don't expect you to see that. Tottenham have not changed much. Basically the same as the last few years.

Walker has moved on and replaced by someone slightly worse. Toby looks to be off. Rose might be off too. They have been replaced by the same level or slightly worse.

There is going to come a point that you either pay to keep the players or win something to do so. I doubt either will happen soon.

Last season, we should have finished higher than we did. We drew a lot of games we should have won. This season we changed that. Unlike Tottenham, we saw an issue and fixed it. Tottenham haven't signed anyone that can improve their first eleven. Hence standing still and offering no tittle challenge. Again. If you were so much better than United, you would be ahead by several points already. As it is, even if you were to finish second, we have improved and will continue to do so, while you sign another back up for Kane who flops and try to replace players who want to either be paid what they are worth of win things. Neither likely to happen at Tottenham.

How long do you think you can keep this up without investing in wages and winning things?

Tottenham have won nothing despite having their best team since the inception of the PL.

I bet Spurs fans are excited about the possibility of lifting the Second Place in the Expected Points League Trophy once again.

Here's what Expected Points gets you at the end of the season:

Of course it has no effect on the points you have.

It is an indicator of whether a side has been fortunate or unfortunate though

Ours and Liverpool's is pretty much spot on.

City's is about 9 less than they have - suggesting they are still a 90+ side, but 100+ would probably flatter them.

Palace have many less than they are expected to, which is fitting.

Points on the table > expected points

We were expected to put in a better performance against Sevilla than we did. We were expected to get 6 points from Huddersfield this season. I never expected to be living in China this long.

Yes, of course points>expected points

Looking at next season, I would expect Palace to do much better and Burnley to do worse. Their expected points this season would suggest so too.

While it is not an exact science, it indicates United have probably punched above their weight this season.

Expected points and expected goals is not just a prediction of how a match should end by the way.

Put simply:

Every chance a side gets in a game is given a value, based on empirical data, on how likely it is it would be a goal.

1.0 being a guaranteed goal
0.0 being no chance of a goal

Lets say 3/4 penalties are scored. A penalty would have a value of 0.75.

A long range effort with a 1-in-100 chance of going in would get a value of 0.01

After a game is played, a teams chances are valued, and added up.

United 2-0 Swansea

XG was:
United 2.07
Swansea 0.16

Spot on

Chelsea 1-3 Spurs
XG
Chelsea 1.25
Spurs 1.30

That would suggest 1-1 would have been a fair result

How do you see it all panning out?

posted on 21/5/18

The irony just appealed to me. An article goes up after we lose at home Spurs for the first time in 28 years and a Man U fan is writing our obituary and 6 weeks later we're lifting one of the 4 main trophies on offer and beating them in the final without breaking a sweat.

In all seriousness It'll all work out. It always does. Chelsea is a major employer in the Fulham area and the government isn't gna upset the existing eco system to spite it's face. They're just reminding Abramovich that they run the show and not him or Putin, and why not it won't hurt.
