I think the point of Michael being with Kay is that she's a "waspy" American girl rather than an Italian or Italian-American who would "get" the life, showing how far removed from it all he was.

Michael showed no interest in the life his father and brothers had chosen, and the family didn't want him involved either. He was geared up for college and then was on about joining the army.

Appolonia was Sicilian and would have understood the life more than Kay, so she'd be the better "Mob wife", I guess.

Also, Godfather III is a brilliant, brilliant film in it's own right, it just gets compared to I & II unfavourably, largely due to the difference in cast, but if it came out on it's own, as a stand-alone movie it would rightly be heralded as one of the all-time great pieces of cinema IMO.

Don't think part 3 was brilliant, but i agree it gets compared to the standards of the first 2 parts and therefore is underrated.

Edit: Not an all time great, but a very good movie.

They should've assassinated him or had him go to jail or something. In fact I think a possible jail sentence would've been better. It would be nice to see how calculated Michael can be at that age when he's up against the system.

It would've been a more realistic depiction of that lifestyle unless your name is Frank Matthews then it's different.

one thing i wished i didn't know was that Robert Duvall was supposed to reprise his role as Tom Hagen in part 3 and because he didn't get parity with Al Pacino, his character was killed off.

But i do like part 3. I agree it's underrated and i like that he is trying to become the man he set out to be.

I also like how he finally got chance to explain why he became the man he became, to Kay.

But it does annoy me a bit that it's being overlooked by Kay (unless she doesn't know) that Fredo almost got her killed in part 2.

We got Vito's prequel.

Ooooh.

there was also plans for a 4th where Vincent took the family back to their past but with drugs and he'd basically destroy the family and have a similar ending to Scarface.

But then Mario Puzo passed away.

Tony died because he didn't want to kill a lady and her children...not because of the drugs.

Wonder what happened with the Omerta TV show that Stallone was going to star in ?? It's been two years since that news.

Funny that, currently watching the whole set now, to answer your question, no doubt it's apollonia, she would have turned a blind eye to everything

I've been watching Gomorrah on Sky Atlantic, modern day Mafia series. Quite hard going though, it just seems that they kill everyone.

I don't understand how anyone can really like the Godfather 3, the ending really rounds off the trilogy but the casting of Sofia Coppolla was awful, she really is terrible and God knows what they were thinking when they had her character "going to bed" (banned word, what a terrible website this is) with her cousin. Talia Shire really goes over the top as well, really brilliant character in the first two but in the second she just turns into some overly angry, blood-thirst nutcase.

Also Pacino really turned into quiet-quiet-LOUD-LOUD! Pacino for the third movie which was not what he was like in the first two.

Anyway, my thoughts if anyone's still reading.

the 3rd one does give us the iconic "just as I thought I was out" though in fairness
