Not quite the same idea.
But I’m not sure how I feel about it. Could be amazing or terrible.

DC also announced their multiverse first, and multiverse movie with The Flash.
Looks like Marvel gazumped the,.
I don't care for multiverses or crossovers, generally, so none of this appeals to me

I'd highly recommend watching Justice League: Flashpoint Paradox. It's a great take on how the multiverse can work.

Excellent movie. And I think that DC are in a much better position than Marvel to execute their multiverse vision in live action movies.
This article gives a good account of the movies to watch in the DC animated movie universe and the order to watch them in, starting with Flashpoint:

It's a completely different version most of the footage you saw in josstice league won't be in it, joker will have a small part likely something to do with deathstroke

$70 million does make sense from a business perspective if they believe that money can be recouped and more from HBO Max subscriptions as well as Blu-ray and DVD sales of it when it's eventually released as a four hour movie. And HBO Max subscriptions might be low at the moment but that doesn't mean they will be when this movie is released next year.
As for Jared Leto's inclusion in this movie, probably just as a cameo, it does lend credence to the theory that Leto isn't the real Joker at all but rather Jason Todd (Robin) after he's been turned mad by the original Joker. Would be very cool if they did that.
Also there are rumours that Leto's Joker is in talks to feature in Affleck's Batman tv series that is allegedly also coming to HBO Max as well. So that would very much tie in with Leto featuring in Zach. Snyder's JL.
Batfleck hbo series, any reliable source for that?

I've been listening to this guy a fair bit. Seems to have got a lot right so far including saying that the Snyder Cut was definitely happening back when people were saying no chance. Also he called Affleck returning as Batman before anyone knew he was coming back for the Flashpoint movie:

So HBO Max and Zach Snyder are already in talks to do a Justice League 2 according to this source and that Snyder and Chris Terrio are already working on the script. They're saying here that it will also be released on HBO Max as a four part series.

If this is true is this the first major sign that cinema as we know it is dead and that future big releases are going to be catered for streaming services only ?

Well yeah the Matt Reeves movie will play in cinemas (if they're open) because it's inception was prior to Covid and it was designed to have a cinema release. But going forward are these movies going to be made with cinema in mind? Are they even going to be made in a movie format ?

So we're in a massively precarious time for cinema then. I'd be devastated if cinema as we know it dies. Would be a huge loss. But I can't help but feel that it's on it's way out. At least as we know it in it's current format.
Movie studios buying theatres does sound interesting. Not great if your local cinema is run by a studio that you're not interested in though.

Basically for the TLDR crowd, Matt Reeves’ movie and the BatVerse he is building will be fine.
