Do your last long run the weekend before- about 8/9 miles, then only a couple of short runs 3/4/5 miles during the week.

Eat plenty of carbs, pasta etc, and drink plenty of water in the couple days before.

On the run itself start slowly for the early stages and increase your speed until you feel comfortable. It’s easy to get overexcited in the hustle and bustle early stages and to blow yourself out, make sure you don’t do that.

Last of all enjoy it, as your first one don’t be thinking too much about time etc, make sure by the end of it you want to do it again.

Thanks

I haven't managed to get in a really long run yet. I had planned to today but it was pretty hot. I'm gonna try and do ten miles next weekend.

Yeah I am a bit unsure of the pace to run at. In my 10k last year by the end I was struggling so I may need to plan it better as this is over twice that distance.

I'm not sure whether to bring my ipod as music spurs you on but I don't want to over exert myself

I don't think that's enough m8. Maybe should've started a month ago. Running 5k for the first few days and then gradually increase the distance to 7, 8 and so on.

Avoid massive meals before the running.

Have a kebab and chips and a rake of pints just before the race. You’ll be grand

Think I will pass on that advice thanks Irish

yeah I don't think I have done enough.

I was actually holding off a bit from training before the FA Cup semi. If Spurs had beaten Utd I wasn't sure I was gonna do the race as I might be out drinking on the day of the Cup final. Should have known Spurs would have let me down!

I'm generally quite fit and can run 10k quite easily without stopping but I realise this is a lot further. I think I should be ok but I doubt I'm gonna get the time I would like.

Don't stuff yourself silly the night before. A couple of immodium on the morning of the race after your morning movement will stop any unexpected toilet stops. Sounds strange but it kept happening to me at 16-17 miles during my marathon training and it's not uncommon for people to get the same around 10 miles. Believe me, from experience, you don't want to be stopping for a dump in a portaloo after several hundred sweaty runner's have done exactly the same...

Otherwise Neo's advice is pretty sound. Give yourself at least 2-3 days off training immediately before the race. It'll feel strange and you'll feel guilty about carb loading and not burning it off but you need to give your legs a break before the event.

Would also recommed vaseline on your nips to stop chafing too!

Yeah I will definitely take immodium. Don't want to be needing the bog during the race. Virgin are organising it and their toilet facilities are pretty good from my experience last year so I'll make sure I go before the race.

Agree about the vaseline as my nipples were chafing today and that was less than half the distance.

Well done on doing a marathon btw . What was your time?

Sizzle

Yeah it definitely is a mental thing. The great thing is that anyone can run so you can start at any level and work your way from there.

I gave up playing football after I broke my leg but running is fine for me now as there is no contact and far less chance of injury

Cheers

Did 4 hours and a minute so a bit gutted I missed the sub-4 bracket but still 20 odd minutes faster than my last one so still a positive result.

Would also say though that you shouldn't do anything new or different to what you normally do before a run as taking say immodium for the first time before a run having never done that before could cause issues. Try and run a negative split, where the second half of the race is faster than the first. You don't want to assume you'll have plenty left in the tank when you go off fast, if you go of steady you can use whatever you have left in the tank the last three miles.

Palmers, you will be fine. I don`t do running, never have, other than when I was at school. But I have been doing hill walking for the past 50 years. Never done a days training in my life, just get out and do it.

A couple of weeks back I did a five hour 15 mile hill walk no problem, and I am nearly 70. You should be absolutely fine, stop worrying, just go out and enjoy it like I do.

Tomorrow I shall have gentle 10 mile stroll over the Lea Valley, just to get myself in the right frame of mind for Wednesday`s match.

Well I don't have a great deal of experience in races. Only casual running - I do find you need the bog when running first thing in the morning so I may take an immodium. I didn't need to go during the race last year but went a couple of times before.

Re pacing, last year I thought my second half of the 10k was slower but turns out it was around 30 seconds quicker so I think I ran a good race. Hopefully my timings will be good again but will definitely not go flat out for the first few miles.

But if you are taking it take it before a few training runs too. I once made the mistake of taking an iron tablet on an empty stomach the day of a race. I had never done that before. Went through the first 5.5 miles around 30mins then stomach cramps hit. Shuffled/crawled the next mile and a half in about the same time. Ruined the entire run, wheels came off the wagon completely.

Know the course you are due to run too. If it has hills and your training run has been on the flat, its surprising how much that can undo a good run.

I think the course is quite flat but I don’t know it that well. In any case I’ve tried to do a bit of hills training so hopefully that will help.

As I say I don’t think I have trained enough to perform my best, but I’m going to try and do sub 1h40m and see how I go

I'm a keen runner, do regular 5 and 10ks and some half marathons, and have entered my first full marathon for next year.

The main thing I struggle with is pacing myself on the long runs. I use a gps watch and set myself slow targets to get the feel for it, then when it comes to race day I know what certain paces feel like.
