It's been a shambolic season at Chelsea, 90% it stemming from terrible recruitment imo.

Decimated a Title winning squad by filling it with cloggers.

I don't think that its bad recruitment,as much as bad man management by Conte.
Going on the body language of most of the players,it seems that they aren't wholly aware of what he wants them to do ,and so you get confusion and indifference .
I shudder to think what the midfield would be like without N'golo Kante ! the defence without Azpilicueta, and the front without Hazand Willy !

The wheels seemed to fall off when he gave Costa the heave-ho via text. That was the moment he jumped the shark and it all went down-hill.

There's a pattern emerging in the PL of coaches winning it, then getting sacked the following season. I think the weight of expectations to mount a title defence plus demonstrate CL progress is too much in an increasingly competitive PL era.

So you lose Costa and Matic.

You sign:

Morata
Bakayoko
Rudiger
Zappacosta
Drinkwater
Giroud
Barkley

For about 220 odd million. How can Conte complain about anything?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Out of those I rate Giroud and Zappacosta. The others don't improve an already good squad. Morata is a good player, but would be more suited to Spain or Italy.

Costa already wanted out, everyone knows that. The text just gave him an excuse to stir things up and force the move that he was already in the process of doing.

That list should have really answered your question.

The best signing was a guy who couldn't get a game at Arsenal and was at best 3rd choice there.

It's the stirring things up which is the problem with the players left behind. A lot was made concerning the manner in which Costa received his marching orders.

My point is more about the money that has been spent. Also, only Drinkwater and Barkley at the time looked dodgy. I bet most expected Morata and Bakayoko to be very good signings.
My point is that Conte can't whinge about investment.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
He can if its not been spent where and on who he wanted it to be spent on which appears to be the case.

On the bright side, you guys are already favourites for next season title imo.

So Conte has no say in who the club buys?
---------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm sure he has a say but he's certainly not in control and has made clear his displeasure consistently when he's been given a chance too.

I like Rudiger. Was gutted when he got the injury that stopped us going in for him a year earlier.

I'd like to make an amendment to my OP.................

When i said i don't fear next season, that will completely change if Enrique replaces Conte. Then i will not look on next season with any hopes.

Yup, fair point Rudiger is good; I don't know why I left him out.

Nah, I still sympathize with him. When you win the title as convincingly as he did last season, it's natural to feel entitled to a little bit of support from the board. It's not as if he was unsettled around January when results started turning, he's foreseen this decline as early as August.

In hindsight two signings have really tied his hands behind his back this season (whether they were his or not). The signing of Bakayoko has meant we can't play effectively with a 2 man midfield, and a 3 means we'd have to play Drinkwater regularly + sacrifice two of Hazard, Willan or Pedro. And the signing of Zappacosta (and the lack of a natural LB before Emerson) has meant we couldn't really switch to a back 4 without playing very predictability.

There's enough blame to go around, to a degree I sympathize with everyone involved. All we can do is make sure we fix it by having a MUCH better transfer window this summer.

Didn't Conte want to keep Matic but was sold to United anyway?

Was he? I thought he wanted a new contract but wasn't going to get one and let's be honest, when you can get £40m for a dm who at 29 will decline after 2-3 years, why not sell?
