How ridiculously stupid to include Mo Salah in this conversation? You can't be a candidate for this award when your club/country won feck all and you just barely qualified fir the cl

Salah

You mean the guy who guided his team to 4th in the league
Win zero trophies and
His team were first to be eliminated?

Should not be mentioned in rhe same sentence as World player of the year

team awards have nothing to do with it you pleb

Read what I put you pleb.
I have never said its a team award. However more often than not a player from a team that has actually won something wins the award

World Cup years can have a freak impact on these awards. Remember when Cannavaro one it on the basis of being the most leader-y player in an Italian team that lacked an obvious star?

If Portugal don't go deep into the competition and if Ronaldo doesn't win the Golden Boot, you never know. If e.g. Croatia battled through to the semi-finals, Modric (also a fine performer in the CL winning Real) for one could be in with a shout.

Modric for Croatia, De Bruyne for Belgium, maybe even Griezemann for France could be in with a shout depending on the world cup.

He was excellent. But we are talking about the very best of which he wasn't. End of the day his teams have won absolutely nothing which 9 times out of 10 is what is judged on

true but I guess im putting more weight on individual performances, he was brilliant last year

So were ronaldo and messi and their teams have won something which generally is what sways the decisions. If liverpool had won cl or salah had a fantastic wc then things may have been different

It would obviously be hugely unlikely, but would Kane be in with a shout if England won it and he top-scored?

Modric once he leads Croatia to the World Cup

Funny thing, this, but I really couldn't care less about player of the year awards at any level.

Never have and never will.

Football is a team game.

Something the 'duh merchants' are getting worse and worse at considering, as each generation of them has emerged.

Society itself is becoming increasingly ego-centric - in the behaviour of its members. The idea of a 'team sport' is becoming increasing misunderstood, and the qualities of those that engage in it, less appreciated as a result.

The best players are the ones that bring out the best in all their team mates. Messi should even have been in with a look in on that basis, but who cares anyway. The 'fanboy mentality' is rife and plaguing us all.

Who cares??

Inclined to agree. It's like the Oscars, it really only means something to the guy he wins it, or other people who might be in the running.

Don't quite get why people get so excited about it.

World Cup hasn’t had the impact on wpoty it used to since Messi and Ronaldo have been on the scene.

I think a lot determines on how the group(s) finish. I could easily see Iran beating Portugal which would mean a group stage exit for Ronaldo and 4 goals isn't that impressive.

Considering Messi scored 4 in 2014 and dragged his team to a WC final - lets not assume Ronaldo has this in the bag considering Messi has outscored and outwon him in the league.

5 goals has been good enough to win it 2 of the last 3 tournaments, how many goals would be impressive then?

This being a famous-for-being-a-great-footballer contest rather than anything else, I reckon Ronaldo's superior goals in a winning CL campaign trump Messi's overall better goalscoring record, even without the WC effect. Also, if you take goals for their nations into account, Ronaldo is now overall only one behind Messi for the season, and looks as though he'll have opportunities, as well as the mood, to overtake him before the summer is through.

In the sense of not being WOPTY worthiness of 'impressive'

Was the league the only competition Messi and Ronaldo played in?

Messi scored 45 in 54 appearances Ronaldo 44 in 44.

I do find it funny how overly sensitive and irrational Manchester United fans are when it comes to Ronaldo.

I'm not sure it's so clear. Ronaldo hasn't had a great season by his standards. Barcelona won the league which Messi was instrumental in. Ronaldo was poor in the CL final. Yes he scored a hattrick in the World Cup but one the goalkeeper threw it in and the other was a penalty which he dived for. Hell even the free kick he scored, was from his dive. Not to mention the goalkeeper setting the wall up poorly.

I think if Ronaldo goes on to score a few more goals then it's his but if not, it's still up in the air.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yeah.
He also scored 15 goals in the CL miles more than anyone else and also scored in every game of CL bar two and also has scored an absolute bucketload this yr alone
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I honestly wasn't aware he'd scored that many. It does show why he's favourite and will probably win it but certainly its not clear cut.
