Wouldn't have happened in the pre-VAR days...

The ref giving a yellow for that was ridiculous

VAR has been used very well during the tournament.
There are times when it hasn’t been used and you wonder why the hell not?

But that decision today was shocking from the ref. VAR rightly used to review if they weren’t sure, but should never have been a pen for handball.

The foul on Ronaldo was a definite pen, and you can see why he gave him yellow after reviewing the push with VAR - never a red though

Diving, playacting, surrounding the ref, making hand signs to influence the ref. Oh how I long for the days before VAR when we didn't have any of this...

i think the problem people always had was introducing the right technology in to football at the right time

VAR clearly isn't everyones cup of tea and doesn't work well enough (missed decisions and wrong decisions), some games it benefits and others it takes away

if iran scored that last gasp chance, portugal would be out of the competitions. How controversial would that have been!

It needs time to mature, i havent given up on it completely but dont think it's gonna be the silver bullet some had thought

Ronaldos elbow incident was either red or nothing. The fact he gives a yellow just shows the ref is not sure what to do. He's afraid to send off the rapist so he gives him a yellow. Ronaldo should have seen red. VAR is not the problem. Referees are!

The biggest error was not using it more often before the World Cup, some of the refs seem inexperienced in it. But overall it has been a massive success. One poor ref doesn't change that.

It was a poor var team too though, not just one poor ref.

How between all 7 or 8 of them (the ref and the VAR team) did that end up a pen?

The biggest problem with VAR is the amount of time it kills. That Portugal/Iran game lost at least 10 minutes due to those VAR decisions.

Its the Penalty world cup brought to you by VAR.

Rivaling a Rugby Union game for penalty decisions tonight. Farcical or should that be Varsical.

Get rid of it. Its absolutely shambolic.

Bet you lot were the same bunch moaning about vuvuzelas in South Africa, kicking up a fuss about the lack of tech in footy after Lampard's ghost goal, kicking up a fuss over Brazil's unreadiness to host a World Cup, are now going on about women commentating footy and how facking awful VAR is.

What a facking bunch of miserable gits.

VAR was successful up until tonight

Even in the Spain game it was a succsss

Complete shambles for the Portugal match. The ref completely crumbled

Pique should have been off. Surely the point of VAR is those types of decisions?

1. Vuvuzelas are horrendous.

2. Goal Line Technology WAS needed and has been incredibly successful, perfect even. It works instantly and there's no confusion or controversy.

3. Women as pundits / commentators doesn't bother me one bit.

4. VAR is a shambles. It ruins the flow of the game, it causes utter chaos and confusion and they're still getting plenty decisions wrong. Several alone in one game tonight. And it's interfering in way too many aspects of the game.

Three out of four. Well done.

posted on 25/6/18

the joke is that people think that technology will clarify things. However its just other refs just watching it on the telly and giving their own take.

It doesnt work because people still decide the outcome, not technology.

Most refs are clueless about football.

As VAR is proving

5. And Brazil weren't ready to host the tournament as the 7-1 thrashing by Germany proved

Farcical this VAR. It seems like to me it is still on trial, and there World Cup is no place to try out this rubbish

posted on 25/6/18

We've had more penalties than in the whole of the Brazil World Cup 2014 already and we're still early in MD3 in the group phase.

It's been a good world cup so far but the amount of penalties are really starting to put me off a bit now. It's like watching Rugby Union. Winning penalties seems to be the tactic.

posted on 25/6/18

Some of the VAR decisions have actually just been wrong decisions by the refs. They watch it again and still make the wrong decision. Those make the headlines. The majority of the time it is used well. There is nothing wrong with the technology.

posted on 26/6/18

The technology is rubbish. It kills the game. You now have players, coaches asking ref every second to loo at VAR.
