I never said the West is doing no wrong, I said people generally who mention global warming blame the Western lifestyle when that isn't the major cause. The countries causing the most damage are developing countries using harmful fossil fuels on a mass scale.
-------------------
Because those countries are adopting a western lifestyle (whilst also being a proxy for the developed world)
----------------------------------------------------------------------
So it's better if poor countries don't develop and stay poor?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
That's not the point now, is it. Total strawman argument, yet again.

We blame the western lifestyle because it is consumer led and is the main cause to all these issues.

Again, I disagree.

Why are you so certain that a consumer led society is the main factor? What about population growth? (which has been stagnating or declining in most western countries). The global population has shot up from 2.5 billion to over 7 billion in less than 70 years. Nearly 3x more people.

Why is a consumer led society more important than a rapid increase in global population? Is it because you can pin the former to the West but not the latter?

Meat is so good though.

If it wasn't for us meat eaters, a lot of this cattle bred for slaughter would become extinct

------------------------
Jesus, you like moving the goalposts. I've already mentioned all the steps that led to mass population increase. If those 7 billion people lived a meagre lifestyle, we'd be ok... Far from perfect, but ok... 7 billion people chasing a western lifestyle is the main problem though.

God knows why you are so keen to make it political via a left/right debate too... It's a way bigger problem than who you vote for... Every single human on the planet plays their part.

Plus think how long all the grass would be without the animals grazing on it, would just mean more use of petrol lawn mowers etc and more pollution.

"Because we're responsible only for the predictable consequences of our own actions. That's why we have to take action."

If the whole of the UK became entirely eco-friendly it would hardly change a thing. Unless scientists and politicians start calling out the actual major contributors to global warming nothing will change
===================

Elementary morality dictates, as I said, that we're responsible for the likely consequences of our actions. I doesn't matter a jot if your and my actions change much in the grand scheme of things. Those actions are the only ones we can do something about, so we should.

If everyone else followed suit... Progress. So before pointing the finger outwardly, take action yourself, first.

As for the major contributors... Whilst China's CO2 emission from fuel combustion is a whopping 28%, the US, UK and the other top 20 global CO2 emitters comprise well over 50% of emissions. China are doing far more to curb their emissions than most countries on earth, including the US & Britain. Consider the UK's ever-growing quest to control the distribution of oil, 3rd runway at Heathrow & fracking...

https://www.ucsusa.org/global-warming/science-and-impacts/science/each-countrys-share-of-co2.html#.W2lvPdJKjcs

Politicians aren't going to pursuit the necessary courses of action without bottom-up pressure; that is, from the public (that's you and me). Privilege & progression isn't something that gets handed down from above. If you're hoping for politicians to take action without public pressure then you're not going to see any changes at all.

Many scientists disagree with the idea of global warming, and human activity is not the cause and it is just natural.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Precisely.

Imagine thinking human beings can change the weathe.

posted on 7/8/18

We are however massively overpopulated, but thats not relevant to this debate.

===========================

What is your expertise on the subject?

Imagine thinking that decades of burning fossil fuels, cutting down forests, industrial scale agriculture and so on, leading to massive CO2 (and methane) emissions into the atmosphere *didn't* impact the climate and the environment!

posted on 7/8/18

Yeah, humans can change the weather by burning stuff. OK.

As I say, enjoy it, our first beautiful summer consistently for ages. grab a corona and relax.

Only complaint is were not built for the nights, need air con units just to sleep.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Alright Donald? . Fake news.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Don’t worry Baz, I am a scientist myself.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Yes, I’m an astronaut.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

No word of a lie, I am in academic research.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Yeah arent you the bloke who said women can turn into men and vice versa

scientist my backside.

Who's to say when the planet is over populated? Plenty of room and food still.

==================

I'll ask for the third time... What is your expertise in this field?

posted on 7/8/18

What are yours?

There is no conclusive proof and until there is im not gonna start believing some cockamamie idea that we have control of the weather anymore than we have control over earthquakes, volcano's etc.

posted on 7/8/18

My position is simply that of the evidence, which is overwhelming, and procured and carefully monitored by those who have expertise in the field.

So again, I’ll ask... what is your expertise? We know you don’t have any. Given that’s the case, what are your sources that underpin your belief that anthropogenic climate change isn’t real?

We’ve understood how the weather works for decades. It’s actually pretty basic level geography. You were almost certainly taught it in school.

posted on 7/8/18

Yes I was, which is why I knoq humans cant change it.

Enjoy it. It will be freezing soon enough

=========================

Again, you weren't taught that in school, because it's factually incorrect.

The greenhouse effect is central to understanding not only how weather works, but the impact that our emissions have on it. The data and observations support entirely that we are now the *sole* contributors to global warming in the last 70 years. 100% of it.

Look, you have no idea what you're talking about and you know it. Even your demeanor, for once, is less hostile.

When you think you're right and are convinced of it, you usually resort to your childish ad hominem. Instead what you're doing here is some rather more polite, quick dismissal, knowing that were you to be drawn on the subject in any substance, you're technically out of your depth.

Just be honest.

posted on 7/8/18

But please provide sources that counter the climate science literature. You geography classes are not a source you can cite because you clearly don't remember them, and I'm not privy it them in any case.

There is no conclusive proof
--------------
there is also no conclusive proof that there are 7 billion people on the planet... You cannot do an accurate global census.

Yet you believe the scientistic and statisticians, right? You believe the overwhelming evidence to suggest there is around 7 billion people. Why? Because of something called consensus... The overwhelming community of scientists have studied the results and conclude they are correct.

Like they have done with....

Climate change

Nah Im good. I hope it does get hotter

But if it does, it wont be anything to do with man

posted on 7/8/18

btw - the idea that humans can't change weather is naive at best. We have, and this is a fact, literally changed the axis and rotation of the entire planet by storing more water in the northern hemisphere via dams and other man made lakes

a consensus is not a fact though, is it?
