Screwed of Kane gets injured

The questions are about wjether tnose 2nd choice players can help to get you the results you need to win the league.

Because so far they haven't, and there aren't any new signings to help change that opinion.

At the moment you're just relying on blind faith that all those players will improve and do better this season

Depends which 3 we sold and who they were replaced with.

If we sold: Llorente, Sissoko and Nkoudou and signed, say, Zaha, Martial and Grealish then I'd say we'd be pretty happy.

The key will be keeping eveybody fit.

But ultimately I do agree with the sentiment of this article. Our squad is not as weak as others suggest.

Players that did not start yesterday and who could've without reducing the quality by TOO much:

Aurier
Sanchez
Davies
Wanyama
Winks
Lamela
Son

A rotation of 17 outfield players isn't bad at all.

It is a thin squad when you are relying on heavily injury prone individuals like Wanyama/Lamela/Winks.

The point was never that the squad was that thin though, the point is that we lack the backup talent so have to rely on the starting XI quite heavily.

Good article Edbo, and something I have been banging on about for a while. Not sure how many players some of our supporters want. I don`t get all this oh but what happens if you have to rely on injury prone players. Every club has their share of injury prone players, but it is apparently only Spurs that have them according to supporters and the media.

This IS the worry though. Particularly Wanyama and Lamela seem like perma-crocks now.

Every club has injury prone players in their squad, we are no different.

If Son and Kane are both out then we are thin for sure. Espeically with Lamela injured 80% of the time.

With no Dembele in CM i worry too and he wont be able to play every game. Most of us are in agreement we only need 2 signings if the core 20 players stay together.

I know we did this earlier but it’s not the case off numbers but quality.

Lamela cannot be counted on unfortunately and looks like Wanyama can’t either.

Llorente, Sissoko, Nkoudou etc are good enough.

If for instance we sold those 3 and signed Zaha then we’d have the quality.

If Giroud and Morata are injured Chelsea are short.

If Firmino is injured then Liverpool are short.

If Lacazette and Aubameyang are injured Arsenal are short.

If Jesus and Aguero are injured City are short.

Etc etc.

We can add all the asterisks in the world with caveats on their versatility but at the end of the day Son isn't a striker and Eriksen doesn't play alongside Dembele or Wanyama so we are still short on genuine quality replacements at ST and CM.

If Son play upfront it's because we've lost Kane's finishing and link up play and if Eriksen is forced to play CM then we've lost his creativity going forward.

Every team in the country has a 25 man squad but it's the quality that makes a difference. Our squad is thin on attacking quality bench options that is crucial to winning trophies.

It's not doom and gloom - we'll do well this season and likely get top four again with some sort of cup run but that's just more of the same isn't it when we've got a fantastic core of players that need a couple great signings to get the wins throughout the season which bring you silverware.

FYI on the midfield.

Wanyama - Injured and not up to speed
Winks - Injured and not up to speed
Dier - Limited in passing from deep
Dembele - Brilliant but cannot play a long run of games
Lamela - Injuries always holding back progress
Sissoko - Very limited player

Hence, thin squad but unfortunately we never have all of them available at once.

posted on 28/8/18

Yeah we have one genuinely reliable midfielder in Dier (Dembele semi-reliable) and we have one genuinely reliably non-striking forward in Moura/Son as Lamela is always injured.

Other teams don't have as many injury-prone players at 1st/2nd choice replacement positions.

No backtracking on my part - I think compared with United and City in particular, your 'back up' options are not good enough.

Striker being the big one.

Now, United are being managed by a cretin and so it's unlikely to matter... but last year United finished higher than Spurs because of squad quality, in my view.

City? Look at the difference - it's huge.

This isn't Spurs' fault... you have done superbly with the resources at your disposal.

But I think it's perfectly credible to suggest that the depth if quality in your squad will prove to be a defining factor in your chances of challenging for the title.

B Team:

Sissoko-Lamela-Moura

It’s not exactly bad is it. Consider United’s back up defence of Darmian-Lindelof-Jones-Young. Or Liverpool’s back up attack of Shaqiri-Sturridge-Lallana. Our squad is deep enough and fans who say otherwise are just looking for an excuse to dismiss Spurs as title challengers.

Kane got injured last year and we still won every game, including Chelsea away. A front 3 of Son/Moura/Lamela did absolutely fine without Kane, although obviously ANY team without their best player will see a drop in quality.

Such a lazy argument - if Liverpool lost Salah they might struggle. If Chelsea lost Hazard they might struggle. If United lost Lukaku they might... do better
