The situation with Stokes and Hales is a bit odd. Why is their disciplinary hearing about the Bristol incident not till December?

I'd think Plunkett will play over Curran, Tom is probably ahead of him too in the current pecking order.

Stone is an odd choice. I get he's in the mix for the test series but I don't see him being in the world cup squad next year and that's surely what the ODI squad should be looking towards. He doesn't have a great List A record either even with his relatively small pool of 25 games.

.................

Why are they even having one.

Test squad has been picked, Burns is in and the other major inclusions are Denly and Olly Stone.

Jack Leach also returns to the squad.

Jennings, Burns, Moeen, Denly, Root, Pope Bairstow, Buttler, Stokes, Woakes, Curran, Leach, Rashid, Anderson, Broad and Stone.

I'm happy with the guys who have been brought into the squad. Certainly Burns earned his place and Leach was an obvious choice. Denly and Stone are worth a shot (I mentioned Stone earlier in the summer and somebody laughed at me!).

Denly is a good player, he's not got an exceptional first class record and he's probably been picked as a back up to anyone in the top 3. Also he's one of those handy players who's not an all rounder but a bit better than a part timer with the ball.

I'd guess he'll come in if Jennings continues to be awful or the Moeen experiment goes a bit wrong so we put him back down the order. If both Jennings and Moeen fail then we're sort of stuck with promoting Root back up to 3 but we'll stick with one of them as it's only 3 matches.

why as Keaton Jennings kept his place?

Happy for Stone to be in the test squad, England do need to try and blood a genuine quick so someone like him or Jamie Overton make sense. I thought we'd plump for Overton as he's played a bit for the lions but Stone has obviously been exceptional when he's played.

No contenders to take his place. Come back Cook, you've left us with Keaton at the top of the order still.

Surprised bell didn't get a recall for the test squad. Sat bang on top of the division 2 averages. Would have picked ahead of denly. Roy instead of Jennings. Also why all the seam bowlers? 6 in Sri Lanka? Just in case it seams or swings out there? Would have picked Bess or Parkinson ahead of woakes who is never going to play out there.

Sri Lanka are very good at home. They just battered South Africa in both tests. The ball turns sideways from ball one and they have a couple of very good spinners. I don't expect us to win. If we get a draw I'll be happy.
Got to win in the West Indies though.

agree with this. i think we'll win the ODI series and lose the test series.

Have to win the tests against WI

This series is going to be really tough. It might help having the ODI series first as it will allow some of our players to get settled over there. Will it be flat pitches for the series or will they have turning pitches?

6 seamers may seem too many but 3 of them are basically all rounders. Burns for Cook will probably be the only change we see from the final test vs India although I'd bring Leach in for Broad and have Jimmy and Leach to open the bowling.

Burns, Jennings, Moeen, Root, Buttler, Stokes, Bairstow, Curran, Rashid, Leach, Anderson

would be the XI i'd go with. Strange they didnt pick another spinner over a seamer, only going to be playing 2 spinners maybe?

as Jennings has gone we can see how he fairs. Look forward to the series, should be a big learning curve at least.

Buttler should play in a specialist batsman position as he is in better form than Bairstow who in turn will have the gloves and generally bats well at 7.
