Yeah Blind didn’t get injured either. Lindelof doesn’t seem to either so he could get a good run of games this season. He’s looked better the last few games playing alongside Smalling. I think Mourinho will stick with this until Jones is back.
Blind should have been given a cartick/Pirlo extended role run in our team. He would have been ideal to dictate play in a way pogba will never be able to, just ticking things over, shaping the play. He never got a proper chance to do that, not like others have (Sanchez, ilookibg at your extended run of shiiitness, but given every chance). Blind had like 1 game then was pushed out, or back to Cb.
There must be a reason for it. He looked average there when Van Gaal played him there and then after he moved him into defence he stays there and looked far more impressive. Plays in defence for Holland and now back at Ajax. He’s obviously better in defence. Though I’d have liked to see him given a go there more often.

I’m sure I remember him losing possession a little bit not constantly but when that happened he didn’t have he pace to track back effectively.
Was it he & Smalling at the back that had a very good defensive run and we didn’t concede for ages or something?
Mourinho: “Dalot played well but I prefer to talk about both full backs. Both him and Shaw were very good defensively & offensively. Dalot is one of the best right backs in Europe and has life to play for United, and Shaw has been playing like this since the start of the season”
Jose not bullying Shaw anymore.
Yeah I think it was, Sat Nav. I lose track of the amoubt of different cb partnerships we’ve had over the last few years.

So true and tbh I think that’s one of our biggest mistakes/problems; too much chopping and changing over the last 5 years. I know we were blessed with long standing players but god - how many players have we had in and out in the last 5 years? Maybe it’s normal but I’m not used to it

Everyone looked average in that awful lvg side. He didn’t even get very long playing there, after he’d just joined too. I expected Jose to completely miss his game, in favour of big lumps like matic.
Question: had a relativley young pirlo been a Man Utd player when Jose joined. Do you think he’d have had a chance, or do you think he would have been sold, it cast aside?
Genuinely think Jose wouldn’t have given someone like that (not fast, not physical, not big) a chance.
I’m jose’s defence, I think if someone performs consistently well he will play them. Some will get less leeway than others sure, but overall if they’re good, they play.
Then I think of Sanchez....forget what I said you’re probably right! 😂
Yep the overturn of players the last five years has been as big a problem as the managers, although it’s the managers that contribute to it.
Baz, be that as it may, Blind is always preferred in defence whoever is coach for club and country. He’s a defender.

Going back to pirlo, do you reckon Jose would have recognised, and/or would have given him the chance in this hypothetical nonsense scenario?
He doesn’t strike me as someone who sees too far out of his box view on things.
Curious to see what others think.
Hard to say really, because Pirlo was actually binned by Inter as an attacking midfielder. It was only at Milan that they dropped him deeper and he ended up becoming the player he was. Mourinho’s teams have often had an intelligent distributor in the centre so maybe, especially if he were coaching in Italy, but I get the point, although I don’t think it has much reflection on Blind given he’s not at that level and came through as a defender.

That’s the thing though- would Jose have the patience and vision to try pirlo deeper? I doubt it. He is far too results driven, hasty, and it shows in his transfers.
If I recall correctly it didn’t require that much patience. And Mourinho then was a different manager to now.
He’s looked to move Periera deeper, in fairness. He doesn’t have the patience to see this through with him, but then Periera doesn’t have the talent Pirlo had. He moved Fabregas back after he played further forward for Barca.
Mourinho’s moved lots of players into different roles and positions over his career and still does so I don’t think that’s something that he doesn’t have an eye for.
Having the patience for it to bare fruit is certainly his biggest problem.
Turncoat Darren sticking up for Mourinho.
