Reserves vs Reserves, you reckon?

posted on 23/9/18

Means nowt to us, genuinely. Wish it did but it’s just a chance to give the youth team and reserve players a run out. Puel wont be remotely bothered about the league cup unless we get into the latter stages which is unlikely.

Means something to me BS.

I want to see our squad depth and I want to win the game.

Yes it means less than league points at this stage of the competition, but I still want to win it.

Totally agree.

After being in the stadium for our last two League Cup wins I know how much this can mean and the legacy it leaves - especially for a club who’s unlikely to compete for the PL or CL. Yes, securing your PL place comes first.

You need a good reserve team these days to go far in this competition so it’s a good gauge as to how strong a squad club’s have. I’m interested to see how well ours will do as, theoretically at least, we should now have a pretty strong second team.

I'd be surprised to see many youth players out, more our reserves I expect; last time it looked like a pretty strong line up.

It will be interesting to see what happens.

I am sure Wolves will be resting players too. In fact it would be no surprise if we see 11 changes. Certainly see starts for summer signings Dendoncker and Traore and both will be keen to break into the first 11, but it might take injuries for them to get a chance the way we are playing

posted on 23/9/18

When I say it means nowt to us I’m obviously not talking about the fans. The club on the other hand couldn’t give a toss

Don't think we will see 11 changes. I expect to see Doherty and Coady start. I reckon it will be the same starting 11 that we saw at Hillsborough

I fully expect changes and Nuno may well go with the same side he put out against Sheff. Wed. Resting and rotating the squad in these types of games enables Nuno to keep the same starting eleven for league matches, all bar injures and a drop in form, of course.

I feel a little sorry for the likes of Dendonker, Traore, Saiss and others at the moment, but this side is playing so well, in every department, that it would be tactically wrong Imo, to even think of starting with a different eleven right now.

Nuno stated at the start of the season that he wanted to have a small squad of senior players and make up the difference with some of our youth and boy is it working.

There must be frustration amongst some of the players for not getting game time, but the competition for places with a small squad is certainly paying off at the moment.

I do hope we see Cavaleiro soon.

Come on you Wolves.

I hope Doherty and Coady don’t start. Certainly be good to see Iorfa get a game as right wing back

Don’t subscribe to the view that clubs don’t care about this competition. I think it’s positive to give squad players a chance in a competitive game and I’m sure those players will be sent out to try and win the game. And there will be some first team players on the bench to help out later on if needed

Could go either way with both teams making changes but the match thread will still be ridiculously juicy for sure

Pretty much all clubs use this cup to play fringe players and give most regular first team players a rest. So by that rationale, I guess clubs don't take these games that seriously. I'm sure if this competition was scrapped, the top flight clubs wouldn't care.

As Wolves via Jeff Shi have stated their intent to be playing in Europe in the near future, I'm quite certain that Nuno, the players and the owners all care very much about this competition.
The league will always take precedent but if through to the semi or even maybe, the quarter finals, I think Nuno would start fielding a much stronger side in a bid to go all the way.

Gem, in fairness I don't think the top clubs worry too much in the early stages, which is why I stated that they don't take it that seriously, as opposed to not caring. You're right though in stating that teams do field stronger sides when reaching the semi's, as there's always a chance of winning the darn thing.

I'm sure we're all anticipating the chance to qualify for European football and that can be done in these ways.

Finish in the top 4 of the Premier League (Champions League)
Win the FA Cup (Europa League group stage) or League Cup winners (Europa League 2nd qualifying rd)
Finish 5th in the Premier League (Group stage of Europa League)
Finish 6th in the Premier League (Europa League 2nd qualifying rd)

England can have 4 teams in the Champions league + 1 more if a different team from those 4 wins the Europa League the previous season. (5 possible). If that were the case then the 3 teams that can enter the Europa League can be made up of the 7th and 8th placed teams finishing in the Premier League.

This season Burnley qualified because Arsenal finished 5th and Chelsea won the FA Cup. League Cp winners Manchester City had already qualified for the Champions League, thus allowing Burnley into the Europa League.

However, if for example West Ham (who finished 13th in the Premier League had won the League Cup, then Burnley would have missed out, as there is no official place for a 7th place team, as we can only have 3 teams entered.

I hope that's not too confusing.

I think I'm wrong about the team finishing 8th, qualifying for the Europa League in certain circumstances.

£110m for Neves? Ridiculous we should consider selling him so cheaply

Donavan Wilson scores for Jumilla, but they go down 1-3.

Really looking forward to this actually, good chance to see some of our fringe players get a game after 6 unchanged sides in the league so far.

No pressure, good chance of winning, players playing for the chance to play in the Premier League, should be a good game.

Not sure how many tickets sold, understand some sections of the ground aren't on sale, good chance then to get down the Molineux and see some decent football.

I think for us it'll be an interesting test of how up for it our reserves are.

We actually have a lot of experience in there - more than in the first team. I expect to see Iborra and Silva in midfield, Albrighton out wide, Fuchs and Morgan in defence, Okazaki getting a start. On paper it'll likely be a decent-looking team and the message should go out: Perform well and push for a place in the first team. The problem is, some of them performed well against Fleetwood and have still got nowhere near the first team despite a home loss to Liverpool and an atrocious performance against Bournemouth the other week. As such, will the motivation still be there?

posted on 24/9/18

Hopefully yes Dunge - this will be a much sterner test for them than Fleetwood, so if they perform well again tomorrow, they would be really putting themselves forward.

posted on 24/9/18

Question is - would you trust Puel to give you a chance if you do perform well, or are his ideas too far set in stone?

It’s strange that in 2015/16 we had a team that won the league, but our 2nd eleven would surely have got us relegated. Fortunately we were fairly lucky with injuries.

Now we could field two separate teams that, arguably, could finish mid-table. If only Claude could find the right balance to suit his particular style.
