Our style is depressing.

All good pressing high, but then you need players to be to be technical enough to not lose the ball when high up the pitch so you’re not suspect to a counter, with the defence being useless and players like Matic who cant even pass and useless lump Lukaku who couldn’t control his own bowel movement, it’s not gonna work.

Our only problem is that our players, tactics and manager are not good enough.

Our sponsorship signings have been world class though. City can only dream of having Kohler on their sleaves

With Mata,Pogba and Matic in midfield what should we expect.

We need fred and perriera in there!

Given that our service from out wide is generally poor anyway, and we don't have the midfield to control games, and Lukaku is unable to play the lone striker as he can't hold the ball up, I'd like to see something like this;

--------------- DDG ---------------

Dalot --- ??? ---- ??? ----- Shaw

-------------- Perriera ------------

---- Herrera ---------- Fred ----

--------------- Pogba --------------

------ Martial -------- ????

Sanchez or Rashford could play next to Martial, or even Lukaku if he discovered some form.

Width could come from Dalot and Shaw (if the manager let them).

Energy in midfield, could let Herrera/Perriera swap if you needed a more combative style in the DM role rather than ball playing.

Lingard could come in to any of the midfield roles, probably the AM, likewise Mata.

I prefer a high press too. I don’t particularly agree that it always gives you a better chance of scoring though, it can vary. The whole attacking transition is made far easier by getting the defending team to lose their shape. Sometimes, you need them to come out a bit in order to do that as if you press high against a rigid compact team, then you’re still going to struggle to get through it and you run the risk of being open to counter attacks.

It does seem to be the new buzz word and people want players to press all the time, but if you look at the Leicester team that won the title, Liverpool under Klopp or us under Guardiola, all of them utilise it at particular times and at different levels depending where the ball is on the pitch. The press in the final third isn’t just about getting the ball back as quickly as possible, it’s to give the rest of the players the time to get back into
the right defensive position.

The issue you have, and it’s been like it for a few seasons, is that you aren’t good enough at making the other team lose their shape as you’re too slow in your attacking transition. I get Mourinho talking about your centre backs a lot, but that’s because he’s still thinking far too reactively about it rather than what you can do proactively to mitigate it.

We must be one of the easiest teams in the league to defend against, agree with that Melton.

Pass and move is non existent.

The issue is we were missing Fellaini. When we have him we can just launch it into the box and 1 out of 10 will go in.

How would they have known? Did they watch Everton?

It doesn't even have to be a continued onslaught of high pressing.

Just some kind of pressing right now will do for me. As the OP says, this is not rocket science.

We used to have one of the highest territorial possession under LVG. I knew when Mourinho came he would be complete opposite and make us go further 20-30yds back and play on counter but even we can't do that lol.

posted on 24/10/18

It must be weird having changed LVG to Mourinho. Mourinho sees the way Chelsea won 1-0 against LVG side the way his side should play as in nick a goal and hang on.

Depends how you play it.

Most of SAF's teams played on the front foot because they kept the opposition in their own half.

We've not spent enough money to be able to press. Pressing takes an additional £42.3m. Mourinho's hands are tied. Maybe in January.

posted on 24/10/18

Which is why it baffles me, in the modern era, when the most consistent sides adopt the tactic of a high press, don't give the opposition time to breath that our last three managerial appointments have not even tried this.
========================

The game has moved on, simple as that. They simply dont lnow how to coach it.

There's a legitimate question to ask whether Lukaku is suited to a pressing game (I'm not entirely sure how Belguim play in that regard as I don't watch them that often) but Lukaku's touch issues from his time at United seem to stem from when the ball is played into his feet from midfield or further back.

The idea is if we win the ball further up the field then the defence doesn't have time to regroup. It's fairly dismissive to think that Lukaku wouldn't get the space required to run on to through balls/crosses that came through winning possession higher up the pitch. He is not good at what he is being asked to do at United at the moment, but he is a good striker.
