----------------------------------------------------------------------

I'd it done in July before my spinal surgery... I was numb below the waist so felt nothing

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Shugs, how's the rehab going? I haven't seen you post any updates for a while. You were going stark raving mad with boredom a month ago if I recall correctly.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Still bored stupid m8,

Recovery wise... Slow ...took 14 weeks to get physio, walking tight, new pain in my hip but drs hope it's nerves sparking back to life and a good sign... It's a pretty searing pain so it doesn't feel like a good sign

My issue was a rare condition called cauda equina syndrome... Basically all the nerves at the bottom of my spine were being crushed.

The surgery was a routine enough disc out and decompression, with a bit of bone cut out too... It's the nerve damage that's my biggest issue (and the rare bit). Can take it 18 months to get repair fully, if it ever does.

I got lucky tho. Some people get left incontinent, same nerves... Some can't walk again. I've the pain and a fist sized patch of numbness around the base of my spine which is unbelievably strange... But I can walk, even if things stay like they are now I'll be alright... Just need cleared for work and a bit of normality back

I'd rather go through that than what Beebs is facing tho

OP - sorry to hear this and best wishes for your recovery.

Thanks for the advice as well.

When they took the disc out did they replace it with another?

I only ask cos I've a couple of degenerative discs which used to have me in agony until I saw an amazing physio at my local hospital, I can manage now but need to be very disciplined in what I do, the pain is always just a couple of lie ins away if that makes sense

Anyway I have a mate whose wife had an op for the same problem (spinal fusion) I think it was called and it's done the trick for her

Damn Shugs, I had assumed it was pretty serious based on what you'd mentioned in the past, but that's far more serious than I'd expected. I have taught human physiology so I'm familiar with nerve syndromes such as yours.

18 months is a long time! Stoked to hear you're now walkingNot the same severity, but I had a bad motorbike accident in 2010 and was unable to walk for about six weeks and off work for a further six months. Was getting close to two years before I stopped physio and supervised rehab, and I extraordinarily lucky in hindsight.

As you say, rather that than having to go through Beeb's treatments. My mum had three mammary gland cancer ops when I was in my early teens. Ended up having full mastectomies, radiation, chemo, the works. Tough old bird made it through thankfully.

I wouldn't have fancied your ordeal either tbh, the impact and pain. I'm a bit rattled by the emergency of it all in truth... But i think I'll shake it off soon enough.

My mum died of bowel cancer that spread. She'd been back and forth to hospital for about 2 years with worsening pain... Because she had suffered with ibs for years they just wrote it off as related issues. Didn't scan and find it until it was too late.

No, nothing replaced.

The physios only prolonging things for you tbh, i think discs can be manipulated back in place but not degenerative. Are you on any waiting list for surgery?

The fusion operation is metal getting fused to your spine... Supposed to be very successful these days.

My dad had it done back in the early 90s and then he was told it was a bit hit and miss but probably the only option he had that might improve him, didn't really work for him...but it was 20 odd years ago.

Cheers for that, no I'm not on a list, I've had problems on and off with it since the mid 90's and the only surgery I've had if facet joint injections which were fantastic at first but wore off after a couple of months, one things for sure I'll need to ado something before I retire or I'll suffer badly, while I'm working and keeping busy it helps keep it at bay

Best of luck to you Beeb, hope you make a full recovery. I read somewhere black people are more susceptible to prostate cancer, anyone know if that’s true?

Sorry to hear that op. Hope you make a full recovery. Best wishes.
