Do City need to win the CL

City already have a great side, they play the best football I have ever seen from an English club, and their 100 point haul ends all sensible debate, they are the best team in the history of the Premier League/Football League.

But yes, they must win the Champions League, there is simply no good reason why they can't, so to fail to do so would be a significant dent in their legacy.

Between 2008 and 2011 United made 3 CL finals. That was the sign of a great team and great manager

What City at the very least need to do is make a final or two. Even Pellegrini got them to a semi!

That’s a prime example of it only meaning so much though to be fair, we were nowhere near as good that season as we have been others and gone out quicker.

Having not won the Champions League doesn't detract from the pleasure I've had watching them over the last 6/7 years.

Yeah officials can have a huge influence on a team’s progression in the CL.

Im not a fan of Chelsea but the game against Barca looked corrupt tbh
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I don't think so, he was just a rubbish ref out of his depth. He fecked Fiorentina over in similar fashion vs Bayern the following year.

True, but winning it is a whole different kettle of fish. It shows 99 times out of 100 you are the best team in Europe and legitimises the legacy of a team.

Haven't read any comments but the simple answer is yes, how many sides are considered great that haven't won the CL?

I think they need to win 2-3 leagues on the bounce and yes within that time (or immediately after) win a CL.

To be on par with teams like Liverpool in the 80s and United in the 90s/00s they need both a CL in there and consecutive league titles.

I think they have a good chance of doing that in my opinion.

There's the correct answer

Arsenal 03/04?

Don’t agree with your first bit there robb. There’s been more than a few times when the winner of it hasn’t even been the best team in their own league. It is a cup competition, after all.

If/when they win the league this season they'll still be in the debate imo just as the invinsibles are.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Thanks invisibles aren't though.

No way are they talked about in the same vein as the great Barca, Milan, United, Bayern sides. If you go further back then we have the Liverpool, Juve, Ajax etc from 60-90.

Guess it depends how you define great. If the invinsibles are in that bracket, it's open to a hell of a lot of sides.

Were Steaua Bucharest a great side when they won it?

A hell of a lot of sides have been great in the history of football.

How many of those sacrificed the league for the CL? I do get that not every side who wins the CL is the best team out there but at the same time to be considered a great side you do need to win the CL

Have you written an article asking a question to then just tell people theyre wrong?

Ultimately City’s aim, especially with the insane amount of money spent should be to become the best side in Europe

They can only do that by winning the CL

I already gave my opinion in the OP

RDD was the one who did articles without giving an opinion. Just a two lined question

Well I think winning a CL cements a legacy in the record books but I feel that if objective you can call the quality of a side regardless of a cup competition.

I'm not sure Real have been the best side in Europe these past three years and yet the will be considered great (rightly so).

I know looking back I'll likely think this City side is/was very, very good at football.

It would cement their legacy, but they can be the best side in Europe without winning one, infact they already are.

There’s a difference between being the best team in Europe and being considered a great side. I don’t no how anyone can claim a team that racks up 100 points in a season isn’t just that based on the lack of CL title.

Same for Arsenal in 04 and Chelsea in 05 and 06. Take your pick of the United sides that didn’t. And that’s just in the pl. All over Europe there’s been plenty of great teams that didn’t win it.

Juve have won the league seven years in a row, breaking records on a regular basis. You can’t tell me they aren’t a great side.

Are they the best side in Europe?

I think Juventus or Barca would have something to say about that

The Juve and Barca that can’t win the CL in recent years?
