Scholes was underrated then retired and has become overrated. Go figure!

Media BS will often big up a player, which will more than likely make them overrated, like Rashford when he first came along.

This is the kind of nonsense I'm talking about.

I think to me what’s annoying is there’s no nuance or sometimes analytical thought given when it comes to analysing a player. They’re either ‘rubbish’ or they’re good, no inbetween. Or a good example is Lukaku, who starts for one of the strongest international teams, regularly scores PL goals (The season he scored 26 league goals for a chit Everton side is really underrated. When was the last time you see players outside of top 4/top 6 even challenge for golden boot), is described as rubbish or terrible more than I care to remember, he has flaws but he’s clearly a good striker / good goalsvorer at a high level.

Other similar examples are Walker or until recently Sterling. They’re clearly good players but how many times do you just hear people say ‘they’re bang average’.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
No ond denies he's a good PL level goalscorer, but that's his ceiling.

I would say Willian is a good example of this, at the start people would focus more on what he couldn't do as opposed to could, now it's gone well too far the other way, especially with the pundits who seem to think he's not far of Eden.

Aye, Willian’s a great example. People look at an obvious attribute, in this case pace, and say that’s all he has, despite evidence that his close control and dribbling abilities are excellent.

The amount of times he collects the ball halfway inside his own half and drives into the opponents half with the ball at his feet is really impressive.

Yes you need pace to do that but the composure to control, turn then the ability to keep the ball close to you, while under pressure, shows more skillsets than “just pace” IMO.

Rival fans often use the trick of overstating a players importance to diminish how significant the star player is to the team.

Chelsea fans generally agree Hazard carried the team to the 14/15 title. However, for some reason I have heard from rival fans that it was actually Costa, Fabregas or Terry who were more important.

Its actually pretty freakish how common you hear it, its like the rivalry extends a lot too star players of team.

Anyone who generally thinks Willian is anywhere near Hazard in quality needs to be medically checked!

Costa,Terry and Fabregas were as instrumental in Chelsea 2014-2015 league title win as Hazard though.

What is funny Black Hawk?Do you think Chelsea would have won the title without Fabregas' assists,Costa's goals and Terry organising the defence of Chelsea?

Ah, it's funny because my point was about rival fans making that statement, and here you are going against my point.

No they were important, but most of the players mentioned were awful for the 2nd half of the season.

Personally, I think overrated is underrated .............

..... but I am willing to concede that underrated may well not be that overrated

Or not

Overrated and underrated have become so underrated as terms, I actually think that posts overrating and underrating players don’t get the credit they deserve.

That will all change of course as we start seeing more and more people claiming that overrated and underrated are underrated and as a result people start overrating overrated and underrated.

In any case, this whole discussion around overrating and underrating and whether overrated and underrated are overrated or underrated is overrated IMO.

Average comment.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Unrated.

A vacillating irresolute comment.

I've heard of players so "underrated", that they become horribly overrated. Just look at Ramires, a pretty decent to average footballer, who was sometimes wildly praised despite being extremely flawed.

I must of missed this during my near decade of being on this siteand 100s of games I went to where ramires played.

So you don't think there isn't a constant conversation on whether Scholes is "overrated", or "underated"?

And come on, Ramires was often labeled as a underrated player.

He's naturally gifted (which probably gives people who don't watch him regularly the aura that he's better than he is) and he's a good ball carrier but his decision making in the final 3rd badly lets him down. Plus he's a rubbish set piece taker.

funny thing with willian is we hear about this supposed pace, but hardly, if ever, see it. His dribbling and close control as well as ball retention are much stronger attributes of his.

Infact he slows the play down way too much
