Interested to see the bookies odds for Sunday’s game where Wolves are made favourites to win the game at Newcastle

Cracking night. Thank goodness the train gods were smiling on me for a change and I made it back from Edinburgh with minutes to spare.

Must admit I feared the worst after the deflected goal, typical of our luck off late, but full credit to the boys for sticking with it and finding the strength of character come back.

We were noticeably more direct tonight, got the ball forward early and didn't f about at the back. And long throws from Bennett, never thought I'd see that under Nuno. Absolutely delighted for Jota, played well and fully deserved his goal. But Gibbs-White was outstanding. So was Saiss actually. And no Neves seemed to allow Moutinho to impose himself more on the game.

But of course we need now to convert this win by doing the same against Bournemouth and Newcastle.

Oh and a few words about tonight's referee of course.

Well done lads and Nuno. Great win.

Now, if we can only play to our strengths (which includes quick counter attacking football) and not worry about how many of our opponents play in midfield, we could certainly finish in a reasonable position this season.

We could benefit playing 3-4-3 with Gibbs-White dropping back sometimes into the #10 position.

Come on you Wolves.

Yeah It must have been yourselves, that had the pleasure of sharing that carriage with Halfy

I forget sometimes the effort and cost that people go through just to watch this great club as I only live about 15 mins from Mecca.

there are a number of guys who have travelled for decades without hardly missing a game, it is a way of life for them, I am sure the pleasure was all ours to have you in coach K!

Yeah the long throws from Bennett cane as a surprise. The new Rory Delap. I think maybe we learned a little from Cardiff because getting balls into the danger area and focusing on getting on the end of the second ball, is a source of goals at any level of football. Wouldn’t want us to make a wholesale change to a Pulis/Allardyce/Bruce/Warnock style of play but occasionally it’s a tactic to use to put opponents on the back foot

posted on 6/12/18

We also need to learn things from Chelsea. In the first hour they were so good at knocking the ball forward to feet and their players were constantly on the move when they didn’t have the ball to make themselves available for those passes. With all of Neves, Moutinho and MGW in the team we have the players to do that and with the mobility of Jota we have that up front as well. Jiminez is good, usually, at holding the ball up but maybe needs to improve his movement off the ball

The long throw is always a decent weapon to have in you armoury. Would never want to rely on it, but it is always a good option to have. People never complain about a corner being whipped in to the box, so not sure why a throw is different if you can do it.

I'm just not sure where Bennett has been hiding it. Not seen him do that before. Has anyone else? He has a monster throw on him.

That tackle of Bennett’s was as much a match winner as the goals. He has been a real surprise package this season.

Terrible refereeing performance tonight. Booking players for tackles that weren’t even fouls. There was one incident where Vinagre made a tackle and the ref waved play on. The linesman flagged for a foul and the ref not only changed his mind but booked Vinagre. Then in another incident Saiss committed a foul and the ref booked Coady.

Some of the worst refereeing that I have ever seen in the Premier League.
In the first half his decisions definitely favoured Chelsea but that was balanced in the second half when Chelsea should have had a penalty and Boly a red card. Instead the ref gave a goal kick even though Boly was clearly the last to touch the ball

Here is a translation of the headline story in the Portugese press today

Wolverhampton are in the final stages of negotiations to hire striker Shoya Nakajima from Portimonense. BOLA knows that the transfer is around € 20 million and should be implemented at any time.

A recent target of Southampton and Leicester, also the Premier League, the Japanese international has been one of the highlights of Portuguese football since last season, when he arrived at the emblem of Portimão coming from FC Tokyo.

"The harassment has been enormous, so it will be difficult to secure it, but we only release it for an irrefutable proposal," said Robson Ponte, vice president of SAD Portimonense, at the end of October.

Nakajima, 24, has a contract valid until 2020 and a termination clause of € 40 million. In Wolves, today directed by the Portuguese Nuno Espírito Santo, it seems that he will join a cast full of well-known names, among them Rui Patrício, Rúben Neves, João Moutinho, Hélder Costa, Raúl Jiménez and Diogo Jota

I did try to say we had players we could only dream of and manager of distinction, but still some idiots want him sacked

Feck me, what they gonna be like when we lose a CL final
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I don’t think anyone wanted him sacked (other than perhaps Wolfgang who wets himself most of the time). There were genuine questions about his tactics and his adaptability after the last month; he has answered them tonight. Hopefully we kick on again.

Wonder if Nuno was mocking Cardiff and their tactics by showing that any team can just lob the ball into the box with a long throw.

posted on 6/12/18

Considering how highly we rate winning corners, I’m puzzled as to why long throws, which are effectively the same thing, are held in disdain by some.

I think they are fine as an extra weapon just not as a big part of the game plan like with some teams.

i have said that with 1 draw and 5 defeats that he was heading for the sack - which makes me wonder why the big boss man was here last night.

Reality is that players are usually closely marked from a throw in situation so possession is often lost from short throw ins. So why not put the ball into the danger area if you have a player with the technique and strength to do that

For once I agree with DJ. We do have the players that can pass a ball to feet and move around when they are off the ball. That's exactly how to play against a side with 5 midfielders and trying to stifle you.

Play to our own strengths and not worry about opponents.

See your point Bute, but it takes better attacking play to win a corner than a throw-in in the 'launch it' zone, most of the time.

This also means that there are fewer opportunities in a game to kick from the corner than to launch a long throw, and the disruption to the flow of a game against the likes of Cardiff or the Stoke of old is desperately frustrating as an opposition fan of a side that wants to get on with the game.

Finally, this is the beautiful game....FOOTBALL, and launching long throws is more like the line-ups from that toffs game, rugby.
