The media in this country are a cancer, that will never change.
On the one hand I wanna say it's racism.
On the other hand it just 'good' journalism because fans from all teams seem to have this 'hate' for Sterling. So the newspaper knows that any story printed about Sterling is going to 'sell'.
Is it the media that's the problem or is the media just good at playing on the emotions/opinions of the fans?
Where did all this so called hate for him from other fans stem from, was it Liverpool fans who started it when he left for City?
Im sure he can console himself with all his mansions, cars and money in the bank. It somes with the territory of being a footballer.
Unfortunate but it is reality
That twitter thread tell you everything you need to know, it's targeted abuse of a young black footballer, I mean on one hand they give out cause he's spending money then criticize him for taking an easy jet flight

I hate all these "isms" and how some are supposedly worse than others.
If I get called a fat, old, lazy, white, c*** buy someone which "ism" do you perceive to be worse ?
I would object to being called a c*** most.
Fat - am overweight
Old - true
Lazy - Comes with being old and less able
White - The colour of my skin )do have a good tan though
Neither of these words offend me, only the last but should I cry racism, ageism, body shapeism, fitism ?

You as middle aged white man are simply treated differently, you don't and haven't had the same experiences as a young black man
There are double standards in the media when it comes to reporting about black people (and when it comes to reporting about women, for that matter). The bar is generally set lower for their actions or words to be viewed as problematic.
Having said that, I think we should be careful at suggesting 'not much has changed since the days of the 1980's and the monkey chants'. Certainly not enough has changed but we've gone from a situation where vitriolic abuse of black players was not only tolerated but indulged in by the majority of fans in certain parts of certain grounds to one where the vast majority of fans are appalled by racist chanting. There's a risk in failing to value progress when we make it. I'm thinking for example of the left-wing Americans who sat out the last presidential election because they didn't see any important difference between the status quo and authoritarian conservatism. Applying this idea to racism, I believe some people on the left risk losing hearts and minds by failing to acknowledge the progress we have made - if everyone is being told our culture is wicked and we can't celebrate the distance we've travelled in the space of a generation or two, we're cutting a lot of people out of the broad coalition that should be fighting against the resurgent bigotry that 90% of the population should be naturally opposed to.
Having said that, I think we should be careful at suggesting 'not much has changed since the days of the 1980's and the monkey chants'.

True enough but in the Sterling incidents he does seem to bring out all the hate and jealousy by his actions and attitude. If he were white he'd still get just as much abuse but it wouldn't focus on his skin tone.
The idea that the racists from the eighties who support let’s say Man Utd have grown up and changed is laughable.
This focus on the media is a distraction.
I don't think it's the same as it was back in the 80s but there is still clearly a problem that needs to be addressed. The media are sc-m.
Huge respect for Sterling for making the comments he did and highlighting the double standards of the media, the amount of sh-t that lad has got in recent years is totally unacceptable.

I'm not so sure people can't change. Racists aren't evil monsters. Racism comes from lack of education, failure to see things from other points of view. It's not surprising that people in a particular milieu where racism was prevalent came out with racist speech. I reckon a lot of those people have since grown up and seen that the world is a more complicated place, just as the country has got used to diversity to some degree. Not all of them, of course.

Yes the odd one can change but it would take a moment of divine intervention.
The average racist gets physically uncomfortable at the sight of the black man. It is really very heavy.
Education or punishment once the seed of hatred has been planted has little effect.
Watch the excuses and lies that will ensue from the upcoming Sterling and Chelsea fan case.
The Sterling case is a bit of a blurred line between racism and the type of media bullying that also happens to young white players, on occasion (wilshire, rooney).
It's hard to tell whether he would have become the panto villain after his City move if he were white, there is a possibility. But the type of narrative certain media take on Sterling is purely racial.

This strikes me as a bit simplistic. There are a few foaming at the mouth racists out there but is there any evidence of a sizeable number of people who actively hate Lukaku because he's black?
The racism of stereotypical associations is a far more prevalent phenomenon today than "I hate black people" racism. To take the Lukaku example, the misguided chant that made racially-driven claims about the size of his genitalia involved a large number of fans (and was defended by a larger still number outside the stadium). You'd never a mass chant in a stadium today telling him to go home to Africa, and you'd struggle to find anyone outside the right-wing fringe movements of our politics defending that. Sterling's comment about racism is also targeting this insidious way of projecting things onto people of colour, not about blanket hate. And today's tabloid media is very definitely complicit in perpetuating stereotypes and racial associations.

I think you're giving the 'average racist' a bit more credit that they deserve. The reason they can change is because their ideas aren't deeply rooted in thought and conviction - the ideas are the product of lack of thought. Plenty of young people latch on to stupid, simplistic ideas (on the left and right) and a lot of them pick up some wisdom and appreciation of complexity over the years. I don't dispute that some people stay ignorant but e.g. I went to a school where crude racist chatter was prevalent but all the people I grew up with have left all that behind.
