This should put an end to all the ONSIDE/OFFSIDE debate - seems the Chelsea pic was taken a split second after the VAR one - notice Kane's body position has changed slightly.
CORRECT DECISION - GET OVER IT AND MOVE ON

The diff between the Chelsea freeze frame and when he kicked the ball was a small fraction of a second at most (although all offsides are judged when the ball looks like this anyway) As if in that small fraction kane had enough time to lean a few metres

Fancy looking at the Chelsea picture angle and the odd angle VAR used and then concluding the Chelsea angle is wrong
Just shows that the corruption in favour of golden boy and golden team comes all the way from the top

Have you actually looked at the pix ? Neither are in line.
The VAR pic is taken at the point the pass was made, the CFC one a fraction later so it's obvious even to Stevie Wonder with a black bag over his head which one to go with.
In the "small fraction of a second" players will have moved a little, move it on another fraction and Kane's whole body would be offside.
VAR angles are the same for both sides, nobody has EVER complained about it before.
Bitter or what

The point being the CFC pic is a red herring as not taken when the offside decision is made.

But the angle of the VAR camera still makes it hard to tell whether it was offside or not. Which is the point of the article.

But neither was the VAR picture, it was also shown at an angle, which suggests as does common sense that the only way to judge offside accurately it to have an in line view..................as we do have for goal line decisions.

Probably won’t, in my experience he comes across a bit thick.

Didn't watch the game so who asked for the decision to be reviewed? As the linesman had a perfect view on it and flagged it up from what I can read online. So why did it have to go to VAR in first place?

posted on 9/1/19

The ref went straight to VAR. He didn’t even make a decision on the pen.

Overruling his linesman?

posted on 9/1/19

It would appear so. But I dunno at what point the linesman flagged and whether the ref saw him. It was a biazarre situation as I’ve never seen the ref go straight to the VAR for a penalty decision

I could be wrong, but I thought I lip read Oliver say into his microphone............"it's a penalty, but I need to know if it was offside".

posted on 9/1/19

That would make sense, Biggish. But it did cause confusion among fans and players as he didn’t make it obvious what his decision was on the penalty.

Also if the directive to the linesman the same as at the world cup? They were told to not flag up marginal decisions and to let play develop as VAR can be used to clear up the offside.

The camera angle that VAR made use of, drew the perfectly calibrated line on Azpi's back foot (as it should). This happened to line up with Kane's front foot. Nice and easy decision for the VAR official!

But wait a second. Kane is leaning towards the goal, with his front knee bent and also appears to be bending his run slightly. His front foot is clearly level with Azpi's back foot, but I'd love to know how his knee, shoulder and/or head are as well.

It was a very close call and I'm all for the striker to be given the advantage. We've missed out on 3 goals recently because of it.

In cases like this in the future, I'd like to think that VAR would come to a decision of inconclusive and then either stick with the original on-field decision (lino should choose to flag straight away and players should play to the whistle) or just always back the striker and say he gets the benefit of the doubt (regardless of the on-field decision).

Flashy, no the ref makes a decision and VAR is used to review that decision. He called for it straight away, he didn’t point to the spot or wave it away as is the common way of indicating his decision.

I just want to know if we can trust VAR to make the right decision on off sides. Last night has caused me some serious doubts.

But it shouldn't have. Oliver last night could have asked to review the video but since the "available one" wasn't clear, he should have gone with the original decision of the linesman.

It seems to have been more of an issue when used in England, Biggish. I’m not sure what it’s been like abroad with regard to offside. It was fine it the world cup, the contention was with the penalty decisions, but from what I recall they had better angles of the offside - they’d obviously used more cameras because it was the world cup.

Why do people put comments like:

'This should put an end to all the ONSIDE/OFFSIDE debate '.

Then put a link to something that shows nothing of the sort, with little quips like, 'notice how blah, blah, blah'.

To put the record straight, my only beef is that in the last few weeks we've had three goals chalked off for offside that were all equally as contentious as last nights incident.

There was no VAR for either occasion yet all were disallowed, whereas last night VAR deems it was ok. So that's 4 times Chelsea have been facked over by nearly identical (esp Girouds 1st).

Until they can get VAR in to ALL top level games they should be thinking seriously about using it at all to prevent more inconsistent decisions, because at the moment it's becoming more controversial than ever.
